    Preparing for a Contest

I am preparing to enter some images into an experimental category for the Super CIrcuit competition this year. I have been working on lots of mirrored image manipulations that create a kaleidoscopic effect. They are meant to be viewed however you feel most comfortable with looking at them but the purposes of today I am presenting them in the format I like best. Please feel free to rotate them to suit if you prefer. Anyway I'd like as much honest feedback as you care to give. As this will be an international competition I figured I would start with the internationals I'm already familiar with.
And please remember these are very SMALL copies the originals would be viewed at any where upwards of a 20 x 30.

I voted for number 2, but it's really a tie for me between 2 & 4. Cool shots!

They are all very creative. The first is nice but seems a little clipped on the edges. #2 might be a tad too contrasty. #3 and 4 are my favoriate, though #3 is busier and #4 might need a little more contrast and possibly some slight sharpening. But I definitely think you're on to something here - enter them.

    I voted for #2

    Hey Clkunkst

They are all attractive and pleasing to look at. I chose #2 in response to your statement about how large they will be enlarged. I think this image will be nice to view from far away. But just as importantly, I think it would be enjoyable to scrutinize up close. The other shots may be too busy (or not busy enough) for a closer inspection.

I think #2 would allow one to enjoy the parts of the fractal up close as well as the entire composition from father back. You never know until you print it. GO BIG!

    Good luck,
    Tim

    Re: Preparing for a Contest

That must be the hardest poll I've ever taken! I really really really liked them all. I picked number four because everyone else kept talking about "busy" (what the he!! does that mean anyway???) so I figured, for a chance at winning, maybe go with the masses. That said, the masses seem to picking number 2. But Three was the one that originally made me gasp. So very very cool!!

    Re: Preparing for a Contest

I vote for number 4 because right away it was easy to look at and i found it pleasing in both it's symetry and simplicity. Also, the contrast between the wood and the steel is more evident and powerful. however, as Tom stated, i think number 2 could have huge potential in a large print.

CL I still think you should see the doctor - but if you go then most of us here should as well LOL

My only problem with all of the photos was choosing one and you didn't include the option for all. It looks like a fascinating building to photograph

Oops! Sorry, forgot to tell you all, it's a multiple choice poll. You can pick more than one if you want. These shots are all from a spiral staircase in a tall gazebo like structure in a playground nearby to me.

    Re: Preparing for a Contest

I'd go for No 2 myself for the same reasons others have stated - that it might have a little more interest on a large print. The one small concern I have is that they are soooo symmetrical that they might lose a little dynamism. Could they be rotated, say 30 degrees within the rectangle? Just a thought.

    Cheers
    Mike

    Re: Preparing for a Contest

Thank you for the input everyone. I appreciate your frankness. I'm still a little torn about the break down as I can only enter 4 and I have three others that are firm in my mind on being entered. So I will go with 4 since it seems to have the best balance of comments and cross my fingers. Personally of these 4 shown I think 3 is my favorite but was afraid that it was too "busy" for general consumption and might even inspire someone to have an episode if contemplated too long. (Sorry they made you dizzy John! )

Didache, I understand your concern about a loss of dynamism but I think that the details will sustain me here. There are lots to be had at this size and part of the fun of these images is giving your eyes a "ride" especially at full size and trying to deduce what you are really looking at. Since the effect depends on the symmetry a rotation just destroys the image. Unless I cut them into circles, which I have, but even still rotations seem to look best at perpendicular angles. I had planned to have them mounted on a lazy suzan so you can rotate them at will while hanging so perhaps folks will just find their own balance to these and that will serve enough to keep them fresh.

I will post my other three choices for submission to this contest today and of course if they get a nod I'll pass the info along. Thanks everyone!

I know the poll is closed... but 3 is my favorite... can you see the tiki-style faces in that mix? I love it!
