    Approaching storm

I tried my best to get the comp. right this time and the sharpness. I mostly took this for the front coming in the clouds were real ominus looking. Not very good at b/w but I'm learning from everyone.

    Re: Approaching storm

I think u did a good job at capturing an approaching storm. the more contrasty b&w works better for me. good conversion to b&w by the way.

i like the leading lines that draw me in to the photo. I wish you would've captured more of the right size (more water less land) you could've composed it where you'd lose a third from the left and add it to the right by rotating to the right to get more water. that way i think the rough waves would've added this shot.

edit: right side, not right size.

I like the second one as well. A tip if you use photoshop: instead of converting to grayscale, try adding a gradient mask (black/white) it usually does a much better job of the conversion, without having to adjust a bunch of stuff afterwards (contrast, levels, etc).

    Re: Approaching storm

I think it would have been better if the picture was cropped, removing everything to the left of the beach.....getting rid of the road, the campers and other vehicles and those motel looking buildings.

Leaving exclusively the dark beach, the white waves, the dark hills and the storm clouds. Basically, I think I would have gotten off the road, and stood on the beach to get this pic.

    Re: Approaching storm

I agree with all the above about the right 1/3 of the image being the most fitting.

Jet: how does using a gradient replace gray scale (or desaturation) as a b&w conversion technique. Wouldn't it leave an uneven result? Is that the intention?

    Re: Approaching storm

I agree with Liban (and the others) completely on this. The interesting part is the ocean and sky, not the parking lot. I'm wondering what it would have been like if you were out at the edge, or in the surf looking along the coast. I see the bright waves and the dark beach playing against the clouds and sky and wish there was much more of that.

+1 on the gradient idea as well. I'm not sure why, but it will usually give better results than a straight desaturate. You can also throw in some channels to fine tune.
