I am doing this poster for a dance troupe here in Louisville. I am going to print this at 24x36. How does it work, to your eyes? To mine it is simple, straight-forward and effective. I don't go in for elaborate fonts, or clutter. The picture on top, and the text in on a white field at the bottom seems effective for this shot and doesn't distract from the vivid image or bright (photoshopped) colors.

Stephen, I think if it works for you, then by all means go with it. I'll agree that it is uncluttered, and the font works well for it. The colors fit the style. Yes, I like it.

Good job for keeping it simple and not going overboard with your font and layout. I think it looks good though the "glass" effect if that's what is on the image is a bit too much IMO.

Also to keep with the darkness of the image, I'd set the bottom area where the type is to either black or pick up any dark colour from your photo (like the really dark blue of the flag) and knock out the type.

Excellent suggestion! I editted it again this afternoon, and this one looks better to me. More "complete." I sampled the dark blue off the flag as the color to replace the white (I chose the background layer, put a marque around the white, then used the paint bucket to drop in the color, after using "color picker"). I changed the main title to a bevel cut so it would "pop out" of the background, and changed the other lettering to simple white.

I also think it looks better this way as it keeps the mood.

If I can give you one more suggestion. The pop that you need in your headline and I think I understand exactly what you're talking about can be achieved through contrasts. In type that would be to differentiate size, style, boldness and/or colour. In this case you only got the size going really while the colour has the opposite effect and in fact melts it in to the background way more than the small type beneath.

I would get a display font (these are the types of fonts you wouldn't write a whole paragraph with, cause it would give you headache if you did) a bold one would do nice IMO. Then maybe make it the same rich red as the persons' hair.
I think that will give it pop that you're looking for.

Looking good though. And good luck man.
