Re: Portrait in black and white

I think the light and tones, especially on the subject are very good. I feel the flowers? in the background although out of focus and dark are still distracting because of the way they sprout out or open up behind her head. She is looking away and with a smile but not engaging in that I'm not feeling any connection with her. It might work better in a series of photos from time/event but as a stand alone shot it just does not hold my interest in her.

I think the tone and isolation works very well. She is a bit centered for my tastes, but seems to follow the "rule" of having one eye on the center line. Speaking of eyes though...and forgive me as I've been reading up on poses, but her left eye is kinda "hanging," as in there's no face to contain it.

I think the lighting looks unflattering to her, it looks like a flash was used and pointed towards her, hence the specular catchlights on her skin. I would change the position of the light source to off-shoe.

besides what have been said, there seems to be noticeable softening on the cheek, chin and neck

I think thats just from flat direct light, not actual optical softness.
