    The Point Reyes

Hello all. This picture was taken at Point Reyes National seashore. I'm interested in your opinion about the picture.

I don't know how others will feel, but this would have been sensational if you'd been standing a few paces to the left, or taken the shot without the curve of the landscape in the center. In addition, there's a little too much light on the shoreline in the middle of the picture, IMO. Perhaps a little darkening could bring out the detail more in that area.
    Love the color though.

Addies Granddaddy, thank you for your opinion. I'm a little confused about "the shot without the curve of the landscape in the center". Sorry, my English is not good... Did you mean the picture will be better without the foreground?

Maybe John doesn't like it being in the centre of the picture.
But wants it off to one side.

I don't think it's too bright, at least not on my calibrated monitor.

SmartWombat, thank you. It's not so bright on my monitor too.

I think, it is not bad in the center of the picture 'cause that diagonal line makes the balanced picture. Maybe I'm wrong...

I love the colors here, but something is very distracting to me. It took my giant brain a long time to actually figure out what the scene was when I first opened it. I can't quit figure it out but it might have someting to do with the spine if the mountains in the middle of the frame as was first said. Maybe because the is water on both sides??, anyway I have a hard time focusing on it. I think its a spot with losts of potential, and I'd try some different compositions.

    Also, great sky!

Irina I have a lot of time for this shot.
The scene has so much to offer and the only thing I would like is to see more of it in this picture. Perhaps your lens did not facilitate this.
I don't mind too much about the shore being sort of central because it seems to sweep off beautifully towards the left corner. In the right side the sand banks in the distance are gorgeous and on top of all that you have a great sky hanging over that super aqua marine coloured water. The presence of the foreground bits help to create interesting shapes depending how you look at it.
Maybe a tiny bit of toning down of the lighter areas in the centre.
    Very well done.

Wow, this shot draws me in. It has depth, geometry, nice colors, good detail and an incredible sky. The only little thing I think could be better would be if the green shoreline wasn't so close to the horizontal center, but that's a small thing. Really nice place and great execution on the image.

    Re: The Point Reyes

I think there are times when the "rule" of thirds and it's "wrong" to centre things can be thrown out of the window. Next thing someone will say it "ought" to be a square crop or something.

I can't see anything to change.
Crop from the top and you lose the large heavy clouds top left, then seem to be balancing the land and without them the sky is too light and fluffy.
Crop from the bottom and you lose that wonderful beach and the graduated colours of the shallower sea with the breaking waves.
Widen it to the right, and I think that brown looking cliff face in shadow would get too dominant and the balance would be gone.
Crop from the right to remove that cliff, and the beach becomes too centred.

I really think the composition is fine but it seems the left side is slightly darker than the right. Like you had your ND grad turned left? Maybe it's this cheap computer I am on?

    Irina, G'day.

That is a very disturbing landscape compositionally. In fact it is a bit too spacey for my earth bound neurones. It doesn't look like we would find the location here on earth.

Please do not interpret my comment as a criticism of your image. The image is totally off the map.

What makes the image most disturbing is the hot spot in the centre of the image and the vignetting towards the left and top right. I think that the uniformity of the tones, from the foreground to the horizon display little change, so as not to give the aerial perspective that I know and am familiar with ... even in such clean air.

I'd like to guess that something like a Hoya G-Series non circular polarizing filter was hand held and rotated to achieve maximum polarization and then placed in front of the lenses, still hand held? Only a guess mind you, but how close am I to solving the riddle?

    Warren.

PS, "Aerial perspective," represents depth in an image by representing objects in the distance, less distinctly than those in the foreground.
