    Petit Jean State Park (Arkansas)

    Hi all...

Hope some of you remember me, I haven't been here in ages. Life's been cutting into my photography time for the last couple of months.

Anyway, we went to Arkansas to visit my grandmother over spring break. We went up tp Petit Jean State Park and did some hiking. It was a great time to be up there... there'd been a ton of rain lately and the creeks were overflowing and flooding the trails in places... really beautiful.

These are from the Cedar Falls Trail.

Good shots. I especially like the Third one. The tones on the rock are very pleasing to the eye and the waterfall looks awesome.

The last one is good but The patch of sun is somewhat harsh, but it's good to have it zoomed out some to give an idea of the setting of the waterfall.

The first one: I like the bottom half, but the top half seems somewhat harsh, but I like how the creek draws your eye upstream.

The Second one: Beautiful shot, looks like a postcard.

    Hey Cara,

I am glad to see you arround. Have you replaced your scanner? The quality of the files is good (no offense intented but this is a noticeable improvement). I like your first two pictures and the last one. They are well framed and easy on the eyes.

I don't really like your third picture. It lacks of direction. I am not sure how it could have been composed differently but nothing seems to stand out and grab my attention as it is.

    regards

    Seb

edit: oddly, the order in which my browser display your pictures just changed. to makes things clear I like your first shot (the river) and your two stream shots. The picture which I find to be weaker is the one with a tree off center at the right of the frame.

Hi Cara, of course we remember you, or at least I do...anyway. I think you have some pretty good shots here. I too find the photo with the tree on the right side of the frame to be lacking something. I like the others tho, and from the looks of it you had some very harsh lighting conditions to deal with. It looks like you got some good exposures out of it tho.

Hi Cara. It's nice to see some shots of my home state on here. I love Petit Jean. It will be especially beautiful over the coming weeks as everything is blooming (especially the dogwoods). I agree with the others about the first two shots, neat shots just probably would have liked a different composition a little better. However, I really like the two shots of Cedar Falls. These are both really nice. Did you shoot any with faster shutter speed? I was just curious to see how they would have looked.

Re: Petit Jean State Park (Arkansas)

    Thanks all for the input

It is a new scanner. I bought a new computer earlier this year, and got an "all in one" dell printer for $25 extra. As a printer, it's awful (I ended up going out and buying myself an epson less that three months after I bought the system), but the scanner is so much better than the one with our older system! I'm sure there are still lots of better quality ones out there, but coming off of our old piece of junk, I'm not complaining

The shot with the tree is cropped from a larger shot, which I'll attach below. It was a point where the creek was splitting, and I decided to crop since I felt like the full shot lacked any sort of focal point.

I've got some zoomed back shots of the falls (finally got to use my new super wide angle!), which I really like the composure of, but has more of the burned out side of the rocks in it. Dratted sun and shadow!

Chris-- We just love Petit Jean. My grandparents moved up to Hot Springs Village when I was four, so we've done side trips to Petit Jean almost every time we visit. It's really just a beautiful park. I didn't see too many dogwoods, but the redbuds were everywhere-- just beautiful The mountain violets and the little yellow flowers (buttercups?) where blooming as well.

I don't think I took any on a shutter faster than 1/30. It's my second time down there with a tripod (we've been doing that hike since I was about five years old-- we have pictures of my brother, sister, and I standing under the falls ). The first time I went down there with a tripod, it was August and the falls was dried to a drip. So I was focused on the long exposure shots this time. My mother still needs to develop her rolls though, and she doesn't have a tripod, so hers will all be faster. The falls were something else, in 10 years of going down to that waterfall, I've NEVER seen that much water coming over. If my mom ever gets her film in, I'll post some of her shots as well.

Welcome back! I find the very top photo to be the richest in color and scenery. That stream is just gushing and full of life. I love the composition and find the shot to be quite breathtaking and refreshing. Great capture!
