    Perspective

Anything other than a portrait, for me, is a weak point.
No sugar coating please, how did I do with this shot?
    TIA

    Re: Perspective

    Perspective is there all right.
And a good cloudy sky too.

The light is flat, nothing you can do about that, but there's no sun, no shadows, just God's softbox evenly illuminating the scene. Maybe some levels and curves adjustments could give it a little more.

But there is a subject missing.

We felt the same at the weekend, lots of nature and no subject.
Mike must have been desperate ... he took a photo of me !
Even with good light, Roger was looking out over the scenery wishing for a girl in a flowing dress to walk through the frame giving a subject to place in the landscape.

    Re: Perspective

Aaah you mean something like this?
Well, the whole point of my first shot was to get away from having my kids in the pics lol.
Not that I mind having lovely models to hand, but, I am so frustrated with not being able to get "IT", that "aha moment" that I long for as far as landscapes are concerned :mad2:

    Re: Perspective

I think you did the best that could be done with what was there. The problem is that there really wasn't much of anything there. I may have tried getting closer to the fence and lower to the ground but I don't think that would have made a whole lot of difference.

    Re: Perspective

It isn't bad at all but as has been said there is no subject in the foreground.

I'm thinking if you had one of your kids put a pair of their shoes in the very near foreground and perhaps a garmet on the fence it could have been killer. Never worry about adding something to an image to make it work.

BTW enjoy your kids while you have them, you can always get into landscapes in that dead time between the kids moving out and you becoming a granny and having new kids to shoot.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Re: Perspective

People keep saying to get lower but I'm thinking, in this case, higher would have been better, getting more toward the infinite far point of the road.
Not sure as don't know what road does out of sight there.

    Re: Perspective

if you could have put the nipper in shot 2 in the shot of 3 i think you would have a winner.

far from a professional here, but i work with kids all of the time
the number 3 shot is SO natural and she looks like she loved being photoed.

the little 'un the number 2 doesn't know any different. she might have been better with big sis in 3 as though both for different reasons seemed to loved being photographed.

and my unprofessional motto is NEVER plead guilty to putting your kids in shots. they love it and you can show them off all you want.

when anyone asks "do you have any pictures of your kids ?" you can always respond..... "well it's funny that you should say that..." and pull out all 25 albums...

(hey they DID ask didn't they ?)

Oh yeah I do, and trust me, my kids LOVE being photographed! Everyone on here who knows me, knows that for a fact lol.
Like I said, I long for that "aha" moment and KNOWING what I am doing with landscapes.
And going by what everyone has said here, maybe I am getting close to that moment

    Re: Perspective

    Alison,

The way I think of landscapes is to break a photo into components fore, middle, and background.

As Paul said last weekend for someone who mostly takes landscapes there was not much around and the light was dreadful (Comment from me through the day 5, 4, 3, 2 hours to go to that wonderful light). Boy I wish we had some of your models as we always had either fore or middle ground missing something.

The only thing wrong with your photo is there is nothing in the middle ground - Anything there would have nailed this photo. So one of the family near the end of the shingle would have been real nice and possibly wait for a bit of sun but not too bright.

Glad to see the new camera having an outing.

    Re: Perspective

Well for what it is worth. I would have made the fence go from bottom to top from a little ways back further and a higher perspective. But I can't shoot a landscape to save my life. Look at my Island house post.

    How can I be lost
If I've got nowhere to go?

These were taken with my 350D and my 17-40mm. I have been so busy editing the wedding pictures from 1st September for my friend I haven't had much time for much else.
Now onto the Johnny Cash pictures *sighs*
