    Patterns In Black And White

This is from an office building in town, and is kind of an experiment for me. I'm posting it to see if you think I'm on the right track here. Advice and suggestion welcome.

Re: Patterns In Black And White

    John,

I've been back to this several times and still can't decide whether I like it or not.

I think my main issue is the lighting and the shadows under the balconies, but it could just be a contrast issue.

I do like the angles in the walls, perhaps making it more abstract would work or perhaps a small amount of colour. I'm rambling now!

I just downloaded and will play with it to see if I can figure out what disturbes me and come back with a response later.

Re: Patterns In Black And White

Well after some play it was a compination of the crop and the tones which caused me an issue.

Try cropping out the top balcony and adding a curves and levels to adjust the tones so you have some near black shadows in the pic. I think you'll find it becomes much more pleasing to the eye - well it did for me

    Hope that helps

Roger has a good suggestion on the top balcony cropping. It is an interesting pattern for sure but the geometry is somehow confusing to me I would also crop off a little from the left so to move the dark shadows a tad bit to the left.

Almost, I would have left a little more room on top so that the line hits the top left corner of the picture, which would include just a smidgen of the top balcony which adds context to the shadow. You also need a slight rotation CC to bring the lines vertical.

    Tones are now much better.

I think this is what Roger meant. I threw in another abstracted version to boot -

Yes that's about it but I cropped it a little tighter so there was even less of the top balcony, but that works to. The picture needs the contrast from John's second posting.

I like the abstract - how did you get this?

Local equalization, Corel PhotoPaint. Try downloading a trial version and play with it (I have Corel stock... ha ha)
