    Panning with swing

My attempt at panning for a photo class assignment. Teacher gave an A+, but I'm fairly skeptical of his marking system, so I want to see what you think. Personally, I think he was much too generous with high marks.

Don't mind the dust spots; I have those edited out on another copy, but I'm too lazy to upload that file right now.

1/30 shutter speed; f/22; 18mm focal length; 200 ISO (like I mentioned in another post, these settings are still just trial and error for me. If they could be set better, please let me know!)

    Please be critical!

Your right your instructor was generous A is what I would have given you assuming in a full photo the chain, jeans, head, etc. were in focus.

The reason for the A is: I would have expected you to straighten the horizon before submitting the photo for adjudication. Other than that no complaint.

    Good colour, composition, and technique.

    Re: Panning with swing

I wish I had an instructor to give me marks and guide me in the right direction.

I'm learning as I go and never know whether I am doing the right thing. Maybe I should start asking for grades on PR

    You did well.

Ah, see that horizon didn't even cross my mind - shows how new I am. How's this one?

Alison, I feel like I'm getting much more help with this here than I am with my teacher! You're probably better off here!

The background unfortunately interferes, particularly the tree that is spearing him in the ....! The front blue part of the swing also distracts from the "swinger". I would have used a neutral density filter and perhaps a polarizer as well, to enable an f stop much lower like f 3.5 to reduce the depth of field. I would have then used software to further blur out the background.

    Re: Panning with swing

Good attempt. I doubt it's A+ work but these type shots aren't easy. I agree that there's a lot of distractions in the background. This is forgivable if things happen quickly but if you have time to set up, should really take this into consideration.

Keep trying. It might take 50, 100 shots before you get a true keeper. Since you're using digital, at least you're not burning film though.
