    Re: Out on the rooftop

    Rick,

Looks like you had a decent sky to play with in this photo. I'd lean more towards only adjusting the sky area or doing it by itself and then adjusting the rest of the image. (I'll play with it and post later)

There has been noise introduced into the photograph by the editing and the colors are clipped(not highlights) in the roof at the lower left and some of the treetops. It is hard to not go overboard.

Sometimes you want to make an unreal landscape or view, but the blue in the sky is obviously one that shows up as a result of going to far with one or more sliders/adjustments.

    What software did you use?

More a little later this evening.

    Re: Out on the rooftop

    Rick,

Here is an adjustment to your photo. I created a layer that was primarily of the sky, and one that was primarily of the rest of the image.

Then I could separately adjust each section. The sky also has Noise Reduction (custom NN mask) applied after a quick rebalance and boosting of the colors and brightness.

There is also different sharpening adjustment to each section, part done after exposure/brightness adjustments and part after noise reduction to bring back edge detail.

I think I'll also do this one another way and if it is better I'll post it as well.

The photo is underexposed to begin with and thus a lot of problems exist.

I didn't do anything to change your overall composition, but would think about doing something different with the big round thing in the lower right, such as move forward so it is not in the photo at all. Secondly the roof line at the right is too straight and direct to add impact to the overall photo. Again, repositioning yourself when taking the shot could add greatly to the overall effect of the photograph.

Hope this might be a help?

I played with it a little. I really like the colors of the sky. Next time you go up there you may look at it entirely different. Maybe get lower on the roof away from the vents in front?

    drg-
Your critiques are always spot on,and great help.
The exact reason I posted this image is because it is so full of "problems" I saw an opportunity,a good chance to learn. Yes, the sky was alive with color, that's always nice.

I'm looking to upgrade my software, improve my editing skills.I have been told PS7 is good, lightroom CS3.Any recomendations? I am using arcsoft 5.5, nikon capture Nx.

DLB1973 - Thanks for your time.I appreciate the feedback.
    With regards,

    Rick
