    Orton Effect

Couple days ago I saw an article over at lifehacker.com on Orton Effect so I tried it with a few images. Any comments?

    Re: Orton Effect

I am a big fan of the Orton effect. I never thought about using his technique in PS though. I think the first one works very well. I like what you have done and it has strong similarities to his work. I feel that #2 is a great composition and has an artistic feel to it but is a little to bright. But nice work on them both. You should invest in his book. I have experimented with some of his double exposure techniques, and it was quite fun,

I've used that method too. Sometimes it works very well. Sometimes it cheapen the image like guilding a lilly. I like the way it works on you first image. The secod one looks overexposed to me.

    Re: Orton Effect

If you do a search in the Forums for Orton, you will find some other examples of this technique, including some from myself.

I like the technique, but like a lot of things in photography, it can be over used. Much like a fisheye lens. The affect is great on some images, but I wouldn't want to look through an entire album of images shot with a fisheye.

I think this technique works well for the two images you have here. I too think the 2nd image is a little to hot, and could be toned down a bit. I think the coposition works well for both images. Keep up the good work.

    Re: Orton Effect

Thank you very much for this thread! I had never heard of the Orton Effect before, but it has sparked my interest quite a lot. I shall certainly be experimenting with it. Just for fun - my first effort (although I realise that it works best for flowers etc).

    Cheers

Thanks everyone. It is kind of fun using this effect and makes somewhat boring image more interesting.

    I re-edited the second image.

Not bad. The first image has a good result. The second attempt at the second image came out very well. Aside from the somewhat magenta and cyanish colors in the sky, it looks quite nice.

    Re: Orton Effect

Your first try is the best (much like everyone pointed out) and although your second attempt at the second works much better, i still would say its somewhat "bland" (the only word that came to mind sorry...)

Although, in the first, i would liked it better if that shape behind the leaves was not there, and if the horizon was level (which i wonder why no one mentioned??)

But the effect was very well executed! Bravo!

This is really good. It looks like a sleepy, carefree summer day at the beach . I wish there was a tad more sky here but it is very good as is. This Orton effect seems to create a halo of sorts around the original objects: I think this can work for a lot of photos.
