    Oregon Coast

Scouting out the Oregon coast this holiday. Numerous photo ops along their coast -- here's one from today. Taking into the sun is always tricky but this one didn't get much flare.

I really like this photo! I don't think I would change it at all.

its stunning....very hard to get the sun without destroying the rest of the photo....although the edges are dark, I think its appropriate, and the definition in the water and sand makes up for what is lost in the dark. Well done.

All I can think is what would it look like tone mapped. It is a very good single exposure shot,

Very dramatic! The reflections and detail are beautiful. I like the darkness -- there's just enough reflection here and there to make it interesting while at the same time "emphasizing" the light because of the contrast.

Overall, a great sunset and seascape, nice composition and framing, however I would like a little more color to show, or maybe a sepia version, as is just a little dark for me.

I think you did very well here GB. I like the crop with the horizon high. You got very nice detail in the shadows in the foreground and the water leads to the sun. I like the color tones as well. My only nit pic would be the boulder on the far left hanging out of the frame. I would crop it or clone it. I think the shot has very good mood as well.

Sweet! ....Just noticed. I think that spot mentioned in you oregon coast 2 shows just below the outermost rock and just right of the prominent rock. I think that puts it at about exactly the same spot so I'd say it is sensor dust.

Wonderful image. The lighting, composition, actually every element you have here is great.

    Re: Oregon Coast

Thanks everyone for such kind words. I guess this shot strikes everyone in a slightly different way, but it's definitely a 'mood' shot.

One technical issue to point out. I had to adjust the exposure compensation to about -2/3 to -1.0 f stops on most of the shots I have taken on the beaches this trip. Why? Because my Nikon D200 is producing perfectly-lit images which are not there... very odd. Maybe the matrix metering equation they use is just too good. So far, it has required my adjustment to produce accurate representation of the scenes.

Dubbs - Thanks. I agree on the dark sides. The center is lit enough to see detail, due to the sun reflection. A trade off worth having.

Daq - More to come, as I probably did about 5-7 multiple exposure sets for HDR fun and games. (See the other post for one of them.) I'm a little concerned that with the soft sand and wind, technically executing 3 or 5 separate images w/o slightly moving the camera may have been close to impossible, at least with the medium size tripod I have (I don't like heavy tripods. Too hard to carry on a hike).

Paula - Thanks, I also like the way it emphasizes one area (which happens to have the nice texture) I may print this one large and see how it looks. I will have to print a few small images first though, w/ slightly different densities, to see which is correct, as w/ this one 1/3 of an f stop could change the whole mood.

Bill - Yep, definitely a dark one. It's funny how dark areas go low saturation though. I've heard that we basically see black and white in very low light because our eyes' rods are more light sensitive compared to the cones, but they don't register color. Not sure why it's like that in a photograph however.

Greg - Great idea on that far left boulder: now that you mention it, I don't like it either. I think the best solution would be cloning so to hold the composition steady.. will give that a try.

Lori - Thanks, so you're a moody gal? There's a lot of that here with all the rain and mystifying rocks. A little too much rain though... Today was a wash out with totally boxed in clouds and constant heavy rain... not that I didn't try (got soaking wet, risking my equipment).

Frog - Thanks for your view. I don't see the spot you mention but you probably have a better/brighter monitor than this laptop's. I have gotten that sensor cleaned twice in the last 9 months, the last time only two months ago... one advantage goes to film.

Rylan, Armando, Chris - Thanks too.
