    One lone Chimney

In 1854 this valley was the sight of the largest mercury mine in the world.

Some beautiful scenery. I think this chimney might be better shot from different perspective. The scenery just overpowers it as a focal point. I'd like to see this shot closer to the chimney with the scenery as a backdrop. Very interesting location that is definitely worth a revisit.

I think shooting at a better time when the lighting was better would have helped. But I think the subject and composition are fine. I just can't tell it's a chimney

    Re: One lone Chimney

i have to agree with the previous two posts. But the idea of the image is great, i guess that is sometimes the hard part. i would like to see it taken from possible the hill it lays on (dont even know if thats possible) but up on the right of the picture, behind the chimney. overall i like this picture, and am kind of wondering what it would look like in a black and white, or aged look to it

    Re: One lone Chimney

    Thanks great tips.

I was over 1 mile from the "subject" This was shot with a 50mm. I'll try to get back out there in the golden hours.

    I appreciate the suggestions

Rick - I agree with the other viewers, hard to say what it is. At first thought it was a tree stump or a cactus. The colors are interesting even if somewhat offbeat, but what I don't like too much is the softness in the shot... why are all the objects soft like that? Tripod might be needed in situations like this where the sunlight is not real bright. The colors seem cold, but that is different

    Re: One lone Chimney

overall, nice shot from that far away! i like the colors but did you use a polarizer on your lens when shooting? if not, you might want to consider it, it would take out the "hazy" effect on your backdrop of the other hills. or like the others said, shooting at a different time of day would dramatically affect your backdrop.

all in all though, it has a lot of potential. nice shot.

    Re: One lone Chimney

    Thanks!
GB1 good point...It is soft. This place has trails all over so you know I'll be back armed with a Mtn bike, using all the tech advice. I'll reshoot this chimney area from the top.I was lazy, didnot make the 4 mile hike to the top.
    I appreciate the feedback.
