One I pulled out from a couple years ago...

Once of my most favorite places in the world, Devils Tower in northeastern Wyoming.

    Comments, critiques, suggestions.

I really like the colors and lighting here. You caught this at just the right time. You also did well with the exposure. The composition works for me as well although I've heard that in a situation like this, your subject should be on the right side so that the eye enters from the left and then goes across the shot to your main subject.

The clouds seem a bit too bright to me but the exposure on the tower is perfect.
Excuse me as I suddenly seem to have an overwhelming desire to mess about with some mashed potatoes.

I was actually planning on rock climbing that day, but those plan got rained out, and in the early evening, there were a few shots that I managed to get that made the day seem less of a waste .

I could have gone the "other way, but they didn't have the "interesting clouds" that side. Guess ya gota work with what you got.

    thx for the comments!

That is indeed the setting of Close Encounters, but most of the filming occurred on the opposite side of the tower in the boulder fields. Interestingly, that movie was the reason that I wanted to visit there after I first saw it in 1977 or so.. Only took me 25 years or so to make the trip.

I'll try making a bit of an adjustment on the clouds and see how it looks.

Don't feel bad regarding the mashed potatoes, I can't eat them without making a tower, and I annoy my g/f to no end when I start naming the different climbing routes and complain because I can't quite get them shaped right...
