    The Old Quarry Boat

I took dozens of shots on the Old Quarry boat tour launched from Stonington, Maine last summer. These are a few of my favorites. I am just a beginner who loves taking pictures - I would love your feedback!

All of them look predominantly mid-grey, lacking in contrast.
    Is this film, or digital?

    Re: The Old Quarry Boat

    Welcome J.

I tend to agree w/ PAul about the greys, there may be a few too many mids. The middle shot is a bit better about it.

Compositionally, the seem OK but I think that sometimes you have to do some cropping or what not to make them more appealing. For example, on the bottom shot, I would crop everything above where the rope is lying on the rock. That will give your photo a more stable and peaceful feeling and better emphasize the strong points - the boat, water and reflection. The middle shot, I really like the overall geometry, but I think it needs a person standing there leaning against the rail, thinking. The top shot is leading the viewer to the house. But there is really nothing special about the house, and I also think this one would probably be better as a color photograph to show off the greens and blues.

These all have promise. Hope to see more.

    Re: The Old Quarry Boat

I like the composition in all three photos, especially the second one for some reason (maybe it's the internal framing). I would've love to see the first picture in colour as I'm curious to know what colour the boat is and how that contrasts against the water and rocks.

I also tend to agree with the previous feedback that there is not enough contrast to render an eye-popping dramatic black-and-white photo.

    Re: The Old Quarry Boat

You very definitely have a good eye for composition. All three images are compositionally well put together.

As the others are saying, all you need now is to get the eye for the little things that lift an image - colour in the first, either a leaning person, or a boat out in the water for the second, a tighter crop for the third.

I really do look forward to seeing further posts as you show all the signs of being a good photographer.

    Be encouraged!

Love the last one, I would bump up some contrast though!

I love the third one. Its a nice composition. The first one is a little too busy and the second is rather boring!
