    Old pictures--your thoughts?

I did some experimenting with some pictures I took while in the Navy back in 1970. Processed in an old piece of software called Professor Franklin's Photo Effects. Please excuse any imperfections...these are from old slides.

payn.....if you're viewing...I know you hate 'artsy' borders, but circumstances dictated the edges on two of these pictures. :-)

I like the painting effect of the first one, especially in the clouds, and do not find the noise distracting. On the middle shot, if it were sharp (and maybe that is the effect at work) I would like it alot as a silhouette.

LOL, I'm learning to ignore frames

Really, the reason is because they typically take my attention away, and makes me think the photographer is trying to hide something behind them, or dramatize a photo. I think with some tweaking and playing, the middle image could be great. As for your compositions, I find them all effective.

I did play with it some, but felt it was too sharp at one point. I applied that softening filter to take the edge off and give it a different look. I'm continuing to work the image though, and will repost. Thanks payn

    John,
I think these are all very good. The first and third ones are my favorites. However, would it be possible for you to post the images before they were enhanced for comparison purposes. I have a friend who was on a fueling ship in the Navy and he's just going to love these when I show him. Neat pictures!

    CL,
These are the original images (a couple have extraneous material cropped out), but since the slides were over 30 yrs old there are dust spots in a few places . I've also taken the liberty to include a couple of extras.

    Dear John
I really like the Big Gulp and you have done a great job with the framing and presentation. It looks very professional. Print this and frame it as shown here. I feel there may be a market for this type of maritime image.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
