    Old Mill

This is part of an Old Mill that has been in our community for many years and is now closed. Three girls were swimming in the creek.

The picture doesnt seem very sharp... I like the affect the sky give the old building but I'm not sure it looks quite right with the people in the water...

All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
    A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

It could be that my scanner focus is a touch off. I am still going thru a learning curve with it. I also started to crop out the girls. I wasn't sure if they belonged in the picture or not. My wife shares your view however.....

Maybe you could try a vertical shot, zoomed in a little of the mill?

There is a colour balance problem toward the green, as well as a gradation problem in the blue of the sky.

The colors are off and I think that you might afford to crop some of the very foreground.
However, I really like how you have caugth that mill, it looks majestic.
I see great potential for that shot. You might try to adjust levels for the colors or you might simply turn it into a b&w.

I reworked this some in PS. I used some of your ideas Seb. Does it look better? Also thanks Ronnoco it was to green. I didn't know that scanning was so complex.

I prefer it without the girls...maybe with the bottom cropped to the edge of the shade - I'm not sure the shade works in it either.

    Re: Old Mill

The second version is better but still there looks to be like some pixelation in the sky. If you scanned it from a print it might work better if you scan from the negative.

This is definitely a great photo op, and one that I myself would do in b/w film early morn (my preference) or late eve with no people in the creek.

thanks, I haven't quite figured out the grainy negatives. Even the ones from the labs look grainy to me. I used 400 film but have since went to 200.

    Re: Old Mill

i like your shot but as every 1 said color. i dunno about you guys but on my screen that second shot is worse the house roof looks purple as well as some of the buildin, but i like to have my screen a little darker.

if you have photoshop cs2 i dunno about older versions but there is a noise reduction option under filter you should mess around with that. also under image adjustments try auto levels adn auto color it may fix your image color a little bit.

    Re: Old Mill

Thanks J-Dogg I have since reworked this again. I think that I am getting it down. I didn't know negative scanning was so comlpicated. I have PS 7. I will check the noise reduction. I am also thinking maybe I need to calibrate or replace my monitor....

    Re: Old Mill

    Greg,

Good shot of something very familar for me. This would make a great black and white or even sepia toned photo. There is a sign on the left of the building that is distracting to me, and the bottome right part of the photo doesn't do anything for me, its just scraggly grass. I think a close crop or a re shoot with more of the building less creek would be good.

If you want to shoot it in B & W I would be happy to develop them in Berry College's darkroom since thats where I work one night a week. We should also go up to Possum Trot and the Old Mill when its running and take some photos...I know a lot of great old buildings and hard to find locations out there.

    Z

PS... good job on your attempt J Dogg.

Greg, I hate to say this but the colors are strange in both cases. I know strictly nothing about scanning. I never did it. There are monitor profiling packages which also allow to profile scanners. Perhaps this would be a worthy investment if you scan on a regular basis. Monaco Optics offers a well regarded one.

In this case, I'd be tempted to convert this into a b&w. This would be a way to avoid the colors issue.

    regards

    Seb

    Re: Old Mill

Thanks J-Dogg That looks better. I need to practice more in PS. I do think that I will re-shot this at some point, And I will take you on your offer Z. I am wanting to sneak over to the old plant and take a couple of pictures. It's half torn down and I might get some good pictures. When they tore down the old high school about a couple of blocks from this old mill I could have gotten all of the old developing equipment including some old cameras. To late now. It's probably at Ottings garage. Ha Ha. Local joke. Z

    Re: Old Mill

I'll give you a heads up on some used equipment. My college is no longer going to be offering tradtional darkroom classes and is now going to be only digital. This time next year I am sure they will be selling all of thier darkroom equipment for pretty cheap. If you want to pick up some Tri-X (CVS or Clyde's) I wil be happy to develop and print anything you might like. Its free for me to develop but will cost me only paper to print, so just let me know. The leaves will be changing here soon and the view from the house of dreams is amazing especially from the watchtower...I can get keys if you want to go up. Yeah, and Ottings got in a heap of trouble from some of the stuff they took from the old school.

PS I used to live and go to church in Lindale. Was your hayfield taken on Marion Dairy Rd?

    Re: Old Mill

No the Hayfield was in Plainville. My mom lives there. And I would love a trip to the House of Dreams. I don't think I have ever been. I did some work at Berry just recently. I put ceiling fans on the porch of one of the houses. But my Dad lives on Conn Lake rd. in Lindale, part of the old Marion Dairy

    Re: Old Mill

As said, I think the first picture is too green. I feel the second one is too red, and I feel the third one is way too contrasty. I agree with Seb, b/w is probably the way to go with this one.

I think there is a 1660-1665 photo of that Mill. I have to look and see if I can find it.

Might be one similar, but I can garuantee that its not the same mill. This Mill was built After the Civil War.
