    Old Derelict

This is an old, broken down barn near Urbana, IL. Taken in mid afternoon on a mostly overcast day. Taken with Canon Digital Rebel and Tamron 28-300mm XR Di LD lens. Settings: f/14, 1/100s, 109mm, ISO-200, handheld.

These are tough on overcast days. I'm thinking a tripod would have helped, and more exposure/less shutter speed. This would be super in b&w, and if you made some minor cropping adjustments could be a standout shot.

    Thanks John,

This one would be just as tough in full sun since I am shooting from the north, the overcast was a blessing in this case. (I haven't found where I can shoot it from the south yet.)

Yep, I need to get a tripod in the trunk! I have a window pod and a beanbag pod now (but didn't then) but neither would help in this case since I couldn't park on the street and get a shot of it and the beanbag would be too low angle, unless I could put it on a fence post, which might work... (The low angle would be cool, but different.)

I did convert it to B&W, but I found that it looked about the same, without the straw color in front. I like both...

What cropping suggestions would you make? Feel free to show an example if you want!

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Marty, this is what I came up with..........someone else can probably do better as I don't have photoshop. But here's how I see it. John

    Cant see the image swm.

I like the shot also, but would like to see this with similar cloud cover during sunset or sunrise.

    Here's my quick crops.
I like sepia old barns ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys! The crop you did is pretty good Mr Yuck. With that close of a crop, I think I might eliminate the little tree on the left of the frame and off-center the barn more, but it is a good idea! It would be nice to get some shots at different times of day here. This shot is from the north. I'm still trying to figure out if I can get a shot of the south side without trespassing!

    Thanks again guys!

You are losing some contrast and saturation in some of your photos. I'm wondering if that lens performs as well at the smaller(higher value) apertures? You might want to bracket some of these with an Aperture change on each starting somewhere around 5.6 and go up from there. You'll lose some DOF but you may get a better result. Also you might want to experiment with compensation. Digital is rather finickyy and outdoors it can be a trial to find what your camera 'likes' best to produce the best image. A full stop diffence may be a lot in some cases and light conditions. But that's part of the reason for histograms!

I'm glad to see some other Illinois images on this site! Monticello is a great place to shoot!

Looking forward to more! The campus is great for all kinds of images. May have to have a mini-gathering there!

    Re: Old Derelict

Thanks for the suggestion CDP. Though this is really the only small aperture shot I have posted from this camera lens combo. (And f/14 isn't that small...) I'll have to post some shots of images that actually have colors to see, this one is pretty monochromatic. For the most part, I am shooting raw, so the in-camera settings can all be tweaked. I have also found that I have a tendancy to like things pretty high in saturation. Frequently I do post processing on a shot to get it how I like it, then when I drive past the place I see that the colors aren't as vivid as I adjusted them to in the image! But reality sometimes need improving on!
