    Old building

This farm building has always caught my eye and I recently actually took some shots.
The photos don't give the 'feel' I'm after, though.
I'm thinking its mostly a composition thing but may be other factors.
I've done no editing except to make them smaller. I did try some but the results weren't any better.
There's a house to the left which I deliberatly left out and a shed to the right which I didn't think fit either. I though I had one straight on without the steel gate but guess not.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

    Re: Old building

I should have cropped off the vignetting,(might be lens hood).

Second one is the best one. The third has good composition, but the sky lacks depth, and the color is flat.

I think if these were shot in black and white, they would have been much better. But otherwise im going to agree with Has He Lost His Mind

Frog, I like #2 it has the best color. I like #3 but would reshoot at a different time of day.

    Re: Old building

Frog....I think #2 is the best shot as well. Aside from cropping out the vignetting as you previously mentioned, the barn seems a little tilted. It could be the way I'm seeing it, so who knows. I'm certainly with JimmyB in that you should get back out there and reshoot from several angles at different times to get a full range of shots.

What an interesting building. One has to wonder about how it came to be.

The contrast seems low. You can see what should be strong shadows from a low sun but the tone in the shadows is not that much lower than the sunlit parts. If this were film I would guess it was under developed.

    Re: Old building

From looking at #2 does the building face the south? was the shot taken in early afternoon? #3 I would try for early morning shot with the sun in the east south east.

    Re: Old building

I think composition wise #2 is best, but for some reason the image just isn't as clear as it sould be almost as if you stacked your filters? I also would clone out the blue trailer door on the right.

    Re: Old building

    Thanks all for your comments.
I think the building will be there a while so I can reshoot.
I'm pretty sure Jimmy is right and it does face south. The pic was taken in fairly late afternoon. The colors seem harsh to me. I'm thinking it might actually do better on a gray day which we have plenty of around here.
I know I hurried a bit in the taking as the road is so narrow, two cars can barely squeeze by and I was parked on it with no real pull over.
Next time I'll park farther away, take my tripod, and take my time with it.

    Re: Old building

Frog - some technical difficulties with the first two. The third seems to be right, though I sort of found the isolation of # 1 more interesting. I would add more space above it. I too feal that there's a better pic waiting to be taken here, somehow. Perhaps its missing some human or animal interaction..

    Re: Old building

    Frog,
I like the overall composition of #3 the best. I like the angle, and the space at the bottom. The bg is fine too with the small barn in the distance. It needs a levels adj, or curves adj to get the pop as in the #2 shot.
#2 I think is ok, but I like the overall feel of the framing in #3 best. #1 suffers from too tight a crop, fence in the fg.
Here is a curves adjustment setting that gave me nice results with your image #3. After applying this adjustment, I dodged the front of the building and side. I thought the overall effect was good.

    Re: Old building

GB, I'd love to have a solitary figure on that rickety looking balcony but I don't think I'd actually want to put anyone up there. Not anyone I like anyway.
Thanks for that curves adjustment diagram, Gary.
I have so much to learn in elements 5 and already I'm thinking of cs2 or even 3. Better figure out what I have first.
