    Odd Roadside Attraction

On memorial day I took my family up into the mountains here in SoCal, Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead for a scenic day out. We decided to come home the back way down the 173 which turns into a dirt road for a while. It's pretty windy, steep in sections, and only one lane with a sheer cliff on the one side of the road. It was actually a lot of fun. As we drove on winding out of the mountians into the backside of Hesperia I saw this on the side of the road on a little pull-off.. I said, "What in the h*ll!!?? I gotta take a picture of that!" Since our memory stick was lalready full my wifie had to find a junk picture to delete, otherwise I would've taken more.

Well, here it is.. Miles from any water on a mountain dirt road..

Good shot; framing, composition, accurate lighting.

But, as with the case of so many photographs, it's not the story behind the image that should make an image interesting, it's the image itself. That's why I always look at the image first and only then I read the comments.

What I saw was a boat and assumed that there was water nearby. Can you see how it lost some of its impact without the background information?

It doesn't change the fact that it's still a good shot.

    Thanks for sharing.

Interesting that this would be laying on the side near a cliff. Elysian is right about the story not being told to the viewer from this pic. As stated the framing , lighting, contrast and overall quality of this shot is good, but I have a minor issue with the composition. I just feel the shot is too much to the front of the boat. I think I would have liked it better if you were standing to the left a few feet more to get more of the side of the boat to get a better perspective of it . And maybe even a little bit higher looking down somewhat more to see more of the mountains in the bg giving us a better idea that this little boat is on a mountainside.
But pretty good as it stands

Thanks for all of your comments. I understand how the image should tell the story on its own. I just felt in this case I didn't capture the location of the boat very well. Like I said, I only had one image left on my memory stick so I didn't get a change to take any more picture. I want to go out there again soon and maybe I'll take some more. It always seems that I see what I should've done after I get home and see the images on my computer, rather than seeing what I want in my head while I'm shooting. I guess that part comes with experience.

    Thanks!
