And now, for something completely different...

... another portrait of... the tool guy. I took this during the same "session" as the fur coat one above. Does it work? What doesn't work? (Yes, the right drill bit is cut off (again), but I'm pretty sure it isn't in the raw file - I don't remember off hand; I'll have to go back and check. I cropped it thusly for leitmotif's sake, thinking I was matching the cropped-out hat on the left... )

Feedback is highly valued, as always.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

Everything looks great but one problem (for me that is). My attention seems to be drawn to the mask in the upper right corner?

I love the composition and expression on his face.

Love the idea and comp. Funny what holydiver mentioned, because MY attention is being drawn to the bright blue patch in the bottom left under his arm... I definitely like this photo!

Now that you mention it, mine is too lol. I guess I was just being fooled.

    Creative angles and effects.
Needs to be wider and not just for the drill bit. I think.

I agree a very good portrait, again. Everything works fine in my book. Good work.

Seriously though, I like your photo.

Basic composition is okay. You really want to make sure that your subject is either the darkest or (preferably) lightest thing in the entire image. This is why our attention is drawn away to the mask and blue thing. I like the post, though.

I like the idea, but agree it's too tight. There's also a color temperature difference b/t your left and right lights. The left light, and hence anything it primarily lights, is noticeably cooler than the right. Different light temperatures aren't necessarily a bad thing, but in this case, it makes each side of his face a different color, which looks very odd, and his right hand fingers a bit blue.

Re: And now, for something completely different...

    Greg - thanks.

Nats - yup, "wacky" and "crusty" were what I had in mind!

Wombat - Haha, I know! I was going for that cheesy tv commercial kind of vibe with the pose and everything else. I guess it shows.

tekdiver - thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind for future portraits. Is it really true that the subject must always be either the lightest or darkest thing in the frame? Are there ever exceptions? (This is how little I know about portrait photography in general.)

brmill and frog - this shot is way cropped compared to the original, so I can back off on that.

The color temperature differences (CTO vs. BTO) were intentional, but maybe I overdid it. I was hoping it would add to the overall wackiness of the whole thing, but maybe it's too much in this case.

holydiver and GiGi - yeah, I was aware of that from the beginning, too. My eye would naturally bounce between the mask, the blue patch, the drill, and his face. I was going for "busy," as I liked the background and thought that there were a lot of interesting elements therein, but maybe this would qualify as "too busy?" If the background were darker, would it be less distracting?

    Thanks again all.
