night at the OPERA

Hi...
We (wife and parents) went to the Lincoln Center tonight and I took the D70 with a 50mm 1.4 AFD and 20mm 2.8 AFD.
Here are some shots.

You did really well I think considering theatre lighting. Keeping the stage well lit and evenly lit without leaving the audience totally in shadow was really good (especially the top one). You can also see why opera tickets cost what they do

The first one is excellent and it captures the whole enormity of the production so well. There is good detail in all areas especially the areas where the lighting is weakest.It also has a biblical feel to it. Technically it is a success as these places are never easy to to get a good result from.

I have come back again to this first shot as I am enjoying so much the composition. I enjoy scanning the scene and the positions and poses of all the characters. I'm surprised it has received so little attention here.

I too really like the first but also like the third just as much if not more. There's so many things going on and my eye travels here and there with none of it being distracting except the bit of brightness at top and the rest is so fascinating I barely notice it.

Don,
there is no problem about bringing the camera to the Metropolitan Opera, but when performing is on the flash should be OFF.

and since I didn't use the flash in the opera I wasn't in any danger.. ;)

I love the first shot, as others have said, because of the way you've captured the intimacy of the setting. The lighting, framing, etc. make this a really fantastic shot!

Where I go to theater there is a strong prohibition against cameras and other recording devices because of intellectual property theft concerns.

Wow, Makes me want to go to the Opera. BW very nice choice. The first shot is a killer. Did you have to move around to get this shot or did you have seats mid stage?

that's where our seats were, to give you an idea of how far we where, I took the first pic. with the 50mm and the pic. is uncropped.

Very nice shots. The first shot is also my favorite for all the reasons already stated. I'm guessing that there are all kinds of interesting shots to be had with those nice curvy stairs.
