My "Go To" spot for sunrises.

Cypress Cove is about a 3 mile paddle from our launch. That means we have to get up early if we want to be in place for the sunrise.

    It's worth the trouble.

Beautiful scenes you've got there, and the birds in #2 are a bonus. My only concern is the artifacts I'm seeing in both images.
    mostly Nikon gear

Josh and Greg - please offer MB1 some advice - something he can do to improve these photos on his next shoot. Just saying what you like doesn't really qualify as a critique. Thanks for helping make this a real critique forum and not just another place where photographers pat each other on the back

I really, really like both of these images. I think you've made great compositions in both - especially considering you're in one of the flattest places in the world

I think I like the first photo the most, but I have an idea that the composition could be improved by using a more telephoto focal length and shooting from farther away. Was this shot with a wide angle? I love your basic idea here but I think it would be worth trying again. I'd like the same basic composition, but with more spacial compression and not quite so square. I'm not saying it will definitely be better but I have a hunch and I think it's worth a try. Plus, experimentation is always useful. There's always something to learn from trying something new.

I agree with n8 that the image quality is a distraction, though. I think I mentioned that in a previous sunrise photo you posted. I'm guessing you took these with a point-and-shoot and you're pushing them really hard in post? This may be one of those cases - and I hate to say this - where a better camera would make a real difference. Or maybe you can think about a different strategy that won't show quite so much noise and compression. Without knowing what camera you're using it's hard for me to give any more specific advice, though.

Re: My "Go To" spot for sunrises.

I shot these with the Olympus EP1 and the Panasonic 7-14mm f4. This is about the most expensive camera I am willing to take out on the lakes unprotected. I really love this lens/camera setup but trying the same spot with a longer lens is a good idea (I've got the stock 14-42 that ought to do the trick).

Sometimes I am so wrapped up with getting close to the subject with the ultrawide that I forget about anything longer, matter of fact I rarely shoot with anything longer than 40mm.

I do have an underwater housing for my Canon 7D that will fit my 50mm f1.2. That combination ought to give me the low light capacity the the EP1 lacks as well as a much longer lens/camera combination.

Next calm, clear morning I'm there!

What ISO were these shot at? I think the EP1 should be able to handle it. Are you shooting RAW? Maybe we can solve the problem in processing? One issue is they appear to be over-compressed. That's a separate issue from noise. I don't think you're going to need to change cameras. We just need to find out where you're losing the quality and plug that gap!

    ISO 200 f9 1/400

It was foggy, I was standing on a paddleboard shooting blind into the sun.

Ok, the problem is definitely *not* the camera - not at ISO 200.

Were you shooting RAW? Full resolution? What kind of post-processing did you do? How did you resize your photo?

We can definitely sort this out

I shot at full resolution and saved in camera to JPEG. RAW meh!

I gave it a quick hit in I-Photo (increased exposure, cooled the white balance and opened up the shadows. All very small adjustments. I reduced the size when I exported to the desktop at medium quality then uploaded here from the desktop.

When I intend to sell an image or enter a contest I will do all my processing in Aperture, for internet display I figure I-Photo is fine.

Incredible location MB1. The bottom one has a classic look. Could be the Yangtze River. A few technical issues like the burned out sun and slight blur on the fellow, but completely understandable (a little more haze would have helped with the sun. Not sure what you could have done otherwise, cept block it with him).

Well, no way to tell from the silhouette, so I guess I should have typed "him/her."
