    Re: My first sunset?

Great first sunset shot, though, as the majority of sunset/sunrise shots, they are quite cliche. I like the shot however, the cloud striking in the mid sky is a nice affect. The silhouetted left is a little bothersome for me; a tad busy, so you might want to look at cropping some out possibly.

Great shot though and hopefully you can enjoy more sunsets with your camera!

    Re: My first sunset?

Your friend gave you good advice. The rule of thirds is the best compositional rule of thumb out there for photography, not to mention art in general. Decent shot but next time look for some interesting foreground trees or rocks to spice it up. Like Jared said, sunsets are somewhat cliche after awhile, so it takes a really powerful to make the difference. But that shouldnt stop you from doing YOUR thing either ...

    Re: My first sunset?

Good start. Everyone has made some good points already, but I will just add that although your horizon line is not in the center, it is still close and almost appears to cut the image in half. i wouyld have brought it down a bit more, and actually since there is nothing more to the sky to offer, i would have put the horizon up into the upper portion of the frame to include more water, reflection and sand/shore. Still, looks to be a pretty scene and worthy of the photo album.
