    My first photo contest

I took this shot on a weekend bike ride playing with my new sigma 70-300. About a month down the road I found an invasive weeds photo contest on the last day for entry and remembered that I had this shot that I was pretty happy with. About a month later I was both happy and surprised that my off hand shot had won! It is a little noisy because I was shooing with 1600ISO without realizing:blush2: . Anyways tell me what you think.

Congrats on the win! What'd you get?

I think it would work better from a slightly different angle...maybe lower looking up a bit so the bottom of thistle heads weren't chopped off.

Thanks for the advice. I really need to think more about composition with spur of the moment shots. First prize was $200! I found myself a 500gb portable hard drive from staples, $196 on sale after tax. I think it was meant to be.

Enjoy, getting first prize is rare. Nice image.

Too bad all the people who know how to run this country are busy running taxicabs or cutting hair.

yes thank you. I won't let it get to my head. It was a very local contest so I really don't know how much competition there was, thats why I wanted some opinions.

Nice shot. Butterflis are hard to get. It would have been (terrible words) neat if you caught in from the side for full wing glory.

Congrats on the win. I like the colors here and it is very good for 1600 iso. . .at least at this size. I agree that a side view, or waiting for the wings to spread a bit would have been nice. You still have a good image here.

    Re: My first photo contest

It's a colorful shot. I think I like the overall lighting, but the lighting on the subject (the butterfly) seems to miss a little. Like Frog said, perhaps a different angle where the light was striking the creature a little better.

    Congrats on the win! :23:

...umm... If you mean how long have I been working with my camera only about 6 months, but I took this picture after I had it for only about 2 weeks. How long did I work on the shot? Not long, butterflies don't stick around long. And as I said before the prize was $$

    Re: My first photo contest

I think the most important thing is that it illustrated your subject. That a butterfly flew in to balance it was gravy.

For next time, it could be sharper and less grainy, but you already knew that, right?

Way to go on winnign the contest.
