My coming out of a tunnel

My son and I went for a ride down an old abondon Railroad bed , at one point we had to go through this 100 year old Tunnel. not a very long on , but cool still, there is still sut on the top from the old steam engines. and has a really good echo.

Re: My coming out of a tunnel

I prefer the black and white...the colors aren't doing anything too special in the first shot so I think black and white is a good option. I think that you can crop this picture down a little though...maybe a little off the top and some off the sides. I love the contrast in the tunnel, though the sky beyond it is overblown which is somewhat concerning. Great shot though,

    Hi, splats

What a great location. No offense but shots without your son at different times of the year at different times of the day would make a great series in my opinion.

The shot looks like an image within an image within an image. Good eye. Work the scene some more. Would love to see what else you can do with it.

Re: My coming out of a tunnel

I agree with the black and white only because shooting in forests and wooded areas like this are very tricky to make the colours look good. its usually all browns and oranges. like...crap. i dont like to say it but when you say a image looks like crap in that context. it usually does. I definitly learned that today while shooting my rusted out truck in the bush. I went with a desarutated version of the shot. maybe you should give it a try too. also I think that for next time if your son were to be on the other side of the tunnell with it framing him. a nice low angle could prove for a nice shot.

I think this picture stands on its own without a person in it. No offense, of course--to me it just would have a better feel.

Re: My coming out of a tunnel

I thank you for all your feedback

I think I'm going to have to go back , do some work and keep my Ham son out of it ( o well whats a dad to do )

this 2 mile stretch of abandon rail has some very interesting features Including that Tunnel , a single arch Bridge that is falling down, a Beutiful 7 arch viaduct and this little bridge on aptly named Arch St.

here again I will need to get the boy out of the shot , plus I also don't like the Car parked in the background, I fell it would look good with out the boy and the car , with the victorian house back there. would look good.

The b&w works well it adding to the timeless feel. I also feel a tighter crop, sclose to what you have done on the last pic posted here would be stronger. As it is, the loos crop offers too much and more busy than it has to be.
in the last image you posted, i think the boy should stay. Adds to the picture.

Re: My coming out of a tunnel

I think the color shot is fine but the BW conversion comes out bland.
An 'S' shaped curves adjustment followed by a channel mixer monochrome adjustment boosting the reds and greens and dropping the blues makes the tunnel darker and gives more contrast amongst the mud and puddles (a strong part of the photo now), and the stonework, trees and hillside.
