    Multiple Exposure Experiment

Here's the last few from my fire dancing group. I did a few multiple exposure experiments with practicers (no fire) and a few "Painting with Light" attempts with the flash head on test. Here are my results. How did I do?

    Re: Multiple Exposure Experiment

    Techincally, these are all good.
But the first one is the one that works aesthetically is the first one.
I like how you placed her to one side and then you have the ball of light to balance out the frame.
I like the funky mix of colors too!

Cindy, the bottom one does it for me. Looks like the guy is inside a circle of fire. Nicely done.

I agree with Brian on this in that the first is the one that works for me. the composition is simple and balanced and the multiple exposures came off very effective. Good work, and creativity.

    Re: Multiple Exposure Experiment

Thank you for the critique and comments Brian, John & Gary.

John ~ Image #3 was the last image of the night, and was the one where I ultimately said 'Aha! That looks like what I was shooting for!' It had been raining off and on all night and I was afraid of getting my equipment caught in a sudden downpour so I was glad to achieve this effect and head for cover.

Brian & Gary ~ #1 was my first true experiment of the evening. I'm glad that you find it appealing. I set the camera for a 30' exposure at F22 ISO 200 and then circled her with my flash head. I just kept blitzing it as fast as the batteries would cycle. It was definitely a different approach for me but I really like the resulting effect.

How much more exciting than the straight photos would have been! The performers might want to purchase these for promotional material.

    Re: Multiple Exposure Experiment

    Thanks Chunk,
I haven't shown anyone else this batch from the past Friday yet. Although I have provided some to them already for use from our first meeting. One I know for sure they will be using is this image as the cover of the DVD they will be submitting for consideration to dance at Burning Man ~ they're giving me credit at the end of the film for contributing the cover art. It's a crop from my opportunity with them. I thought it was appropriate given what they are working towards.

    Re: Multiple Exposure Experiment

Well, I like all three! I think this is one of the most creative uses of multiple exposure I've ever seen . What ruins it for me on the second has nothing to do with your execution. It's that she seems so exotic in her costume, and he pops up like some Old Navy ad. If he had had an exotic costume as well, the shot would have been a great one indeed! What fun.

    Re: Multiple Exposure Experiment

    Hi D!

Thanks so much for taking the time to plug in here and comment on one of mine! I thought you might like these. I agree with you about the second image. I liked the way I was able to run around and bring out each character by popping the flash over or around them as I passed by but would have been happier to have the real fire dancers instead of folks who weren't actually performing that night. As you pointed out Larry is out of costume and it adds a little too much reality to the scene. Still, a good experiment and I am truly looking forward to my next opportunity with them. I think I may have to do some more of these multiple exposure experiments in the back yard in the mean time so that I really know what I'm doing next time. Time to stock up on some sparklers!!!

Great to see you on the boards D! Thanks for the critique!

    Re: Multiple Exposure Experiment

CL - Decent expts. I like the bottom one the best.

All three have good stuff, but I would grab/mask/zoom certain stuff out of the photos and enlarge them, like the woman on the right side in the middle shot, and the woman in the top shot. To me it seems that the fire is more distracting than helpful. The circular one, it's just too confusing for me

Don't forget to do this on the 4th with sparklers!!!!
