    Mountain Range

Shot this a couple of months ago. I live in Northern Georgia and took this shot of the mountain known as Mount Yonah. The clouds were finally right like I wanted them over the mountain and so I decided to shoot this. This shot is by far one of my favorite shots that I've ever done of the mountain. But I thought I would post it here and give some critiques out of it and see what you guys think. Enjoy.

    nice shot
    nice details in the sky
the black and white doesn't work for me , there are no details in the vegetation, everything seems to blend in together

    Re: Mountain Range

This looks like it was HDR'd to darken the sky (or lighten the ground and leave the sky dark) resulting in a halo at the ground/sky boundary, which is very distracting. I see no problem leaving the sky brighter, I don't care for the dark corners and upper edge.

    Re: Mountain Range

The converted this to an HDR in Photomatix and used one of their B&W presets(?) to convert it. I then took it into Lightroom to take out some power lines and polls that were in the field. But I did not intend for their to be a halo effect in the picture. I did, however, put a slight vignette on the photo which is why the edges are dark. But the sky was already a little dark before I took it into Lightroom.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

I like that the cloud mirrors the shape of the mountain in reverse -- cool! It may be just my monitor, but the overall image looks pretty dark to me. I like to see it brightened just a tad.

It's pretty dark actually. It's got a lot of blacks in it. But it is a little lighter on my screen. So I have no idea what that is.

    Also, thank you, dancer.

    Re: Mountain Range

(Alert, newbie trying to give critique! )

I'd like to see this picture a bit larger. Maybe the details in the trees show better cause i think it is in there.

Also i would incorporate the fence on the left a bit more to make the composition a bit tighter (probably a matter of taste and what your intend of this photo is).
Maybe photograph this at another time so that there is a bit more contrast in the forest and make certain areas stand out more. The way this photo leads ur eye (in my case) is through the center across the forrest to the clouds and the tonal range/contrast isnt really that big there.

It all depends on what you tried to achive with the photo and what feel you wanted it to expres i guess.

All n all, nice shot, it does keep me interested

The details are in the trees. I've had it blown up pretty big in Lightroom, but I admit, it's not the sharpest image, but the details are there. But yes, I photographed this in the afternoon around 3Pm. So the sun was high above the mountain. That may be the reason their is so much light on the middle of the mountain. But thank you for the critiques. I enjoy all of them very much.

beautiful sky...m starting up myself...but my untrained eyes are fighting to know what exactly the subject is...if only you could give more weight to your subject by placing it more/less on the 3rds line...I think it would have made a huge difference !

I see what you're talking about. I wish I would have been able to place it on the thirds too, but I wanted to keep the detail in the sky and the detail in the field too, so that's the reason it's centered and not on the 3rds. But thank you for the critique.

    Re: Mountain Range

Its as previously said a bit dark, and I think it needs a foreground element. Also the clouds coming over the hill on the left seem a little weird, like they have been shot at 3.2 sec and not the 1/320 you used

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

I tried to get rid of the ghosting that the slower shutter speeds created, but Photomatix didn't take them out for some reason. I mean, I don't mind it to much because I like the fact that the clouds are moving a little bit, but I wish it would have taken the ghosting out.

    Re: Mountain Range

Certainly dramatic Levi. The sky's incredible and the mountains seem to form an interesting shape. My only complaint is the too-little foreground, which seems cut off to me. I guess it isn't as important but I would still like to see a better balance.

    Re: Mountain Range

Nice material to work with and the mono really suits it, but for me, the eye doesn't really get pulled in to the shot and there isn't a really strong dramatic focal point. The top cloud looks a little strangely processed too. Almost photoshopped in.
Please have a look and leave a comment or three...

Yeah, I know what you mean, but they're not photoshopped in. Like I said, Photomatix didn't take the motion of the clouds moving out like I wanted it to. I don't think I had the box checked, sadly. But thank you.

It looks as though you used some sort of filter, without looking at all the comments. I think it's a little on the dark side and could use a nice vertical subject to help it along. You have a nice sky to work with and a beautiful background you just need another element to finish it up.

What I really wish I could do is have gotten a model out in the field, but the field itself is private property. I took this through a fence on the side of the road. But I understand what you're saying. But for some reason, It doesn't seem to dark on my screen. :/ Maybe my screen is not calibrated right. But thank you.
