    Mountain Lake and Boats

Taken at the Mammoth Lakes CA area pretty recently. Does it seem cold? It was about 45 degrees outside.

I like the way the boats are framed, but I wish you would have used a landscape format. That way we could see a bit more of the lake...a wider angle lens would have worked good on this also. For the time of day you did a great job on exposure, but I would like to see a bit more saturation. Looks like a beautiful area.

    Cheers.

Hi GB1,,,,nice image...The canoes add depth to the image and extra colour...As PT mentioned a bit more contrast would lift it heaps...Also I would rotate it about 10 deg anti-clock wise..

    Re: Mountain Lake and Boats

Thks Jurgen and Tao - I did actually take a landscape format shot, but considered the vertical format one superior. Perhaps I'll scan the other and post it for comparison. I did shoot it with a 24mm lens... I think I need a 20mm or even wider for these type landscape shots (landscapes look so nice where you can see everything all around).

Jurgen, you're prob right about the tilt. At first I thought that was how the lake was, but now, I realize that that's prob physically impossible for water to settle like that

Tao, you might be right on the saturation. It's also a tad dark to me. Might be a nice place with the sun reflecting off the water at sunrise/sunset. Gives me an idea for next visit...

There is really too much contrast and loss of detail in the shadow area of the boats as well as in the trees. This is somewhat characteristic of Kodachrome 64. There is also not enough colour info. in the trees to bring up their real green colour which is part of the difficulty of exposing Kodachrome 64 for both highlights and dark areas.

    Re: Mountain Lake and Boats

Ronnoco - Thanks for commeting. There does seem to be big-time loss of detail in the trees in the distance. I never totally figured out KR film -- sometimes it handles contrast extremely well, but at other times you get a lot more than you'd like. However, I've also noticed that Velvia has quite a bit of contrast. I think this is charactistic of slide film in general. It just does a poor job in afternoon light.

I think the loss of color can also be attributed to a slight under exposure. It looks to me like it might be about 1/2 f-stop under.
