    Re: Mountain Bike Pictures

This is a tough one. There's lots of stuff wrong with it. The first thing is that it's way too busy. The people in the background compete with the rider for my attention. The rider is too centered and you're missing a key element of the action - the prop that his rear wheel is on. We can't see that he's three feet off the ground, balancing precariously. I would have shot it vertically and used a large aperture to blur the background a bit. It's also good to compose a photo like this so there's more space in front of the rider. That suggests forward movement. Your composition actually takes my attention away from the rider and makes me look at the announcer to the right. It also looks like there's some motion blur on the rider's head. So you needed to be using a slightly faster shutter speed. What camera were you using to take this? Are you using manual or auto exposure?

Sorry if that was a little brutal. But you asked, right? :-)

Think about the stuff I listed here and next time you can shoot some trials, try using a larger aperture and faster shutter speed. That's a good place to start.

Let me know if you have any technical questions.
