    Motor parts

Working in a automotive machine shop creates some good photo ops. Having a boss that is willing to let me play on break and lunch is a big bonus. These were taken in the dyno room at work. Using my nifty 50. Please let me know what you think.
    Thanks Jimmy B

Top image: I don't like that blurred part taking over the top left of the image. I do like the colors and wish you had more of the red anodised stuff in the image. I also wish there was a little more depth of field so the gauge was in focus. For this one I'm thinking that you should get in closer and show less stuff.

Bottom image: I want to move the camera to the right so it is centered between the 2 barrels and everything else is cropped out. As it is there is just too much stuff in the image for me but it would work better for me if you cropped tighter in on just the one barrel.

    Jimmy,

I have to agree with MB1 on his comments. the first is spoiled by the out of focus part and more DOF would be in order. I do understand that at times you have to take these pictures in akward positions to get the shot, but hey thats part of the fun.

The bottom one works for me and is not to busy, however there is also the shot that MB1 was talking about with both trumpets in symmetry.

    Keep them coming.

I really like the first one as it is. Keep in mind that you need to look at it sideways as it's meant to be a vertical shot. I like the fact that just the meter and first rocker arm are all that's in focus. It looks more artsy that way. To me if you have the whole thing in sharp focus what you have is a product shot, which is great if that's what you're going for.

Re #1: Any item in the foreground that is out-of-focus is likely to be a visual distraction from the centre of interest and therefore a NO NO in composition and technique.

    Re: Motor parts

Wow, I guess people really do see things differently. To me, when you make something in the photograph in focus and the rest out, it makes me train my eye on the in-focus part. Which, of course, is the focal point. You really can't get much clearer than that. For my eyes, I would find this photo much more distracting if it was ALL in focus. So, I like it how it is.

The second picture just doesn't do much for me. There's really not a whole lot going on, and the yellow "knob" in the middle of the one tire is very distracting.

Yeah to bosses who let you take pictures at work! You should try and get some of people working on these parts or sparks flying (do sparks fly there?). I'll bet there ARE some interesting photo ops there

    Re: Motor parts

Thank you all for the feedback. I was trying for a tight DOF on most of the shots, and moving out in some of the later ones, as you can see below.
The angles on the stacks through me off, and trying to get the composition and crop was a little of a challenge( for Me).
Molasis the little brass deal sticking into the port is the injector, wich the gas flows through. At the time of the shot I didnt see the reflextion on the throttle plate. I will work on getting some sparks flying and chipps being thrown!
The dyno room is very busy with all the stuff hooked up on the engine, next time I shoot in there I will try to make it as basic and uncluttered looking.
    Thanks again, Jimmy B.
