    Re: Mother Climbs the Stairs

I think this is, or could be a very interesting shot and would be more so had mother being in another situation rather than walking up the stairs. Had she been say, sitting on the steps, face in hands contemplating over something, then I think I would enjoy it better. There's a thingy to the right too that does not help. I like the nice curve in the handrail and I would experiment further here if the stairs was in my house.

I agree with Tom. I'd pull back further too so all of the window was in frame.
Is this like in a lighthouse or something?

Cindy - Looks like a lighthouse (I've been in enough of them to know). I like what you are doing here, capturing the unusual geometry. I think this is one of the few times where a fisheye lens would have been perfect.. esp from above. Perhaps given that you couldnt get the scene to be wider, I would actually crop it a little to eliminate some of the extrenuous items. What do u think of this? I think it might be a little cleaner. This is a hard one alright.

    Re: Mother Climbs the Stairs

It is a lighthouse! It's the Hatteras Light which is in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's most notably known as the pirate Blackbeard's hang out (not the lighthouse but the surrounding shoreline). A very popular National Park.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Tom - I agree that this would have been a more dynamic image if I could have gotten her doing anything else. I was sorting these from our family trip this summer. That is my mother (who doesn't like to be knowingly photographed) and since it is such a busy place you're not allowed to stop in the stairwell. The thingy on the right is the balance weight mechanism that used to turn the light around. I didn't notice it at first glance thanks for pointing it out. The lighting and the curve of the hand railing across the frame are what made me pause over this one.

Frog - Pulling back would have been nice should have brought my fisheye, as I recall I was really crunched to get in as much of the scene as I did as it is a very narrow space in the stairwell.

GB - I like the crop you've done. You're right about the fisheye too, I wish I had it on the camera when I did this climb, that would have made for some neat effects when coming back down as well. Unfortunately the park service really limits you, asking that you not to stop on the stairs (which makes sense with all of the people), no backpacks (so I could only bring my waist bag, no room for the extra lenses ), and I was getting my two kids (3 & 5) up the stairs as well, oh and about 35 people behind me. My plate was full.
