More snow shots

I finally unloaded my camera after a few days to get a few more shots from when there was snow here. When it was here, I was too busy doing things and shooting photos to unload them.

First is the dock, part of a series depicting the same shot in every season of the year:


Here is my friend walking up the street by himself to go sledding, again...


Here's another friend whose photo I took as I was standing with nothing better to do:


Snow covered power pole and lines (that's cut/dead ivy on the pole):


And lastly, here's a robin that landed next to me in the snow when I was waiting for the bus:


Not all are great shots, but good enough that I thought I might see what other people think about them. So, now it's your turn, as always...

I REALLY like the last one...the bird in the snow..
What was the aperture on that one...! 1.4?

Did you just say 1.4? It was somewhere in the neighborhood or F5.6-F8, I can't remember exactly though. Too bad the whole beak isn't in focus. I could edit that, but I don't want to right away.

The bird shot is great. You got him right at eye level, with great sharpness and colour. He certainly does not look happy in the snow and that is why getting the eyes is important (to get that expression).

The first two have the problem of typical winter shots. The colour temperature is too cool with a tendency to blue in the first one, and more black and white in the second. The snow also reflects more light than a person, with the result that the blue colour of his jacket does not show up well at all and neither does the wood and red colours in the sleigh. At the same time however, it is necessary to keep the snow white in colour and not washed out in detail. Quite a challenge!

On camera, I would consider adjusting the camera menu to the colour balance option of shade to warm it up a bit and perhaps use an enhancement filter as well to further bring out the colour in the image. I would also over-expose sufficiently to get colour in the clothes and the person in the shot without blowing out the snow. Another challenge!

In postprocessing it is also possible to warm up the colours a little and to selectively brighten up some shadow and dark areas but only to a limited extent.

Yeah, I havent really worked with them other than to get them onto the internet. I've been busy with school, but when it ends in the next week I'll have more time to go back and edit the photos more, including the seagull, and I'll see what I can do in my free time. Thanks for the comments.

I like the snowy dock, even with the "cool blue", in fact, it gives me shivers, while looking so bright and sunny.
