Moon over Brooklyn rooftop.

I have not been shooting for a while, after having moved and still sorting the place out. This was an in-camera double exposure of the moon and a roof top here in Brooklyn. From the roll of film, this was one of the few that I thought was effective.
What do you think?

Actually, I find that this picture have a particular appeal and works to a different level because of the patterns created by the silhouette of those two ladders, go figure!
I really like the inclusion of the wall and its angle, it adds depth to the photograph. The moving clouds are interesting as well and add dynamism.

In the end, my only concern is about the strong grain in the sky. In fact, it doesn't even seem to be grain, it rather looks like scanning artefacts, which is most unusual coming from you.

I think it's an excellent shot. The kind that I like, very abstract and surreal.

The thing that pulls it together for me is the brown line that comes down from the top left. Had the structure been black all the way, I don't think this shot would've been as strong. That creates a nice contrast in hue between the blues and the browns.

Glad to have you back - missed your critiques

This to me is stunning and I love the grain in this photo it just adds that extra moodiness to the photo and builds on the effects of the clouds for me.

The building and ladder are excellent and the right amount of detail is captured in the building.

The only bit I'm not decided on is the cable forming a V from the building. I think it might be better if it wasn't there but not sure. I would have to see both together to definitely say yea or nay.

yea, the photo is great, but the wires do throw it off a little bit, they just look like their not supposed to be there, like their trespassing

Welcome home! Nice to see you haven't stopped doing your in camera moon shots. This certainly has a different feel than anything I have seen from you previously. The movement of the clouds almost makes it feel shaky and out of focus. Thankfully you have included a strong silhouette of the [public servant] fire escape ladder to anchor this. Is this a cross pollination of concepts? I think it is interesting indeed.

Brian. . .I appreciate your thoughts on this. I think your saying that you don't find the silhouette of the ladder to be a good subject to go along with the moon.

Seb . . .Thanks for the analysis. The two ladders and the sloping roof top, from my vantage point ( back porch) was what attracted me . . .and then I knew where I wanted to place the moon. Actually not scanning artifacts, but lots of grain. 400 speed film but more grainy than normally. The grain was then reduced, and thats what makes it look not quite like grain/noise. I redid this shot, taking a little of all the response from the thread and find I like it better with lots of noise, B&W, and the wires cloned out. I will post the edited version soon. Liban . . .I'm happy you like this shot as I posted it. I also like the line you mention offsetting the other hues, but the B&W version has the same effect but with tone rather than color. I would like to know what you feel abut the edited version soon to be up.

Brent, yes the moon came out like this. This is the way it looks on the negative. The only thing different now is conversion to b&w and the wires cloned out.

I like this alot better, what do you think?

I liked the touch of blue black in the original, I thought it added a little more than just B&W not that I don't like the B&W.

what focal length were you using? I can never get the moon to come out that large.

The B&W is definitely smoother, cleaner and more define looking. At first, I didn't think the V wires were a problem but having seeing this without them I can't seem to shake them off my head when I view the original again.

I think the tighter noise is more pleasing than the fatter grain in the original.

I still like the original as far as the colours go. But that's about it. The second is definitely better in evey other aspect.

I agree with Liban the grain is much less distracting and more appropriate feeling in the black & white version. The removal of the wires has definitely cleaned this up compositionally. Much more Gary like now.

Thanks for chiming in about the re edited version. The grain looks better I feel because it is natural, the way it is on the negative as opposed to having tried to smooth it and getting unnatural results.I am happier with the wires gone.
Brent, the moon was pulled in with a 500mm focal length. ( Sigma 170-500mm lens)

Though nice without the wires, it is only a different image. The wires were an addition to the graphic representation of linear dynamics in the original version - an addition instead of a distraction. I believe I prefer the first.

Impressive either way.

well, that would explain why i can never get the moon close like that, my moon shots are always far off and small. i definatly like the wireless photobetter, opens the picture up more, feels free(er?)
