    The Moon

with the 500 mm mirror lens (750 mm equiv). Shot on a monopod. Shots with my light tripod were worse because of vibration.

1/800 at iso 1600... Just wondering what made you choose those settings?

A fixed aperture mirror lens is a bit of a constraint.
    Catadioptric lenses have no diaphragm.

    Re: The Moon

    Okay,

I'm just now becoming interested in mirror lenses but still I wonder about using such a high iso to shoot a bright, relatively stable object?

I should add my most successful moon shot was at 1/40 and movement of the moon was not an issue.. using a tripod and 2 second shutter release.

    Cheers, Don

    Re: The Moon

How can you have less vibration with a monopod than a tripod? Thanks.

    Re: The Moon

Thanks guys. I took that image at 800 iso because i wanted a maximum shutter speed. I don't know but my tripod (which is comparatively light weight) seemed to vibrate when the shutter went off. I was too lazy to play with locking up the mirror and was going to give up. I noticed that this monopd image wasn't bad. This is just not my thing.

    Re: The Moon

Over the past year I've occasionally googled moon shots and when I noticed the full moon a couple of weeks ago about all I could remember is quite a few shots were taken in the 1/125 speed range.

So I started there and chose iso 100 and f 10 thinking it would yield more detail. I was shooting with the 50-200mm + ec 14. This gives me a 35mm equivalent of 566mm.

My first shot at 1/125 was too dark so I took a series of shots, lowering the speed each time till I reached 1/40 and the exposure appeared correct. I used center point focus on the middle of the moon and a two second delayed shutter release with the camera on a tripod.

This is a 100% crop of the result...

I tried again recently with the waxing gibbous moon and changed my settings to 1/50, f8 and iso 200. This shot may be a little more dramatic but is slightly overexposed. Once again a 100% crop..

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers, Don

    Re: The Moon

The noise in the photo is what ruins it for me. If you would take the noise out of the surrounding black portion of the sky it might not be as noticeable

    Re: The Moon

Hmmmm, must be a monitor thingee, they look fine on mine and in fact, the second waxing gibbous moon shot is slightly blown on the right side

Not quite the same as being dark but any brighter and they start to lose detail....

Don't worry Don, experimentation will yield results. If I recall my best results / moon shot was...on a crystal clear night, in twilight, around 1/125 @ F/5, iso 200. 300mm. It's in my gallery somewhere... b.t.w. Get a decent tripod!!!

Here is a moon image that I think is about as good as it gets...In the PR gallery. My opinion only...

    Re: The Moon

Thanks guys. I'm really not into playing with the moon. I'm an earth guy. This was just an inevitable experiment. I may try it again though.
