Hello Seb
I'm not best qualified to comment much on this (never took a flower shot in my life) but this one works so well for me. It's simply set up and the color treatment is lovely. The table tone and it's curve help create a lovely composition.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan
I definitely prefer this shot to your first, Seb. I really like both, but this one is just so much nicer as far as composition goes. It's very elegant, as John said.
Hi Seb,
I find the shot simple and effective. The muted colours work very well. I agree with Tom that the curve table adds a lot to the overall feeling. I have been trying to figure out the flower arrangement. To me, if the unopened bulb on the right is put to the left, then there is a transition of the fully opened flowers to the semi-opened flowers and finally to the unopened. I guess it is just me. Nice shot!

Great Shot. Wonderful composition, very impressive! Not much else to say! Definite improvement over the first.
Thank you for the positive feedback. May I ask what you mean by improvement over the first picture? Although I am going for a series I believe that the first picture and this one are different enough to have identities of their own and not compete against each others.
Have you tried applying a gradient to the background? I like an angled dark to light gray (pick your colors from the shot) gradient in the upper region starting in the upper right, which adds just enough contrast to emphasize the flowers even more. I did just a quick and dirty selection to see the effect but think that a careful selection of the background would be worth the time and effort.

I didnt really like the composition of the first one - this one feels more whole, complete. They would certainly go well in a series too...
I really like this shot for its simplicity. It's nice, but somehow the table doesn't live up to the contemp. style of the vase, flowers and wall. It's like it should be a marble or something. Close...

The problem with this shot is that the centre of interest does not attract the eye of the viewer, because it blends in, too well with the background and the other colours in the photo.
What draws the eye is the vase, not the flowers and only because the colour of the vase is slightly more prominent than the colours in the rest of the photo. In this regard the shot does not work.
An interesting experiment would be to change the flowers to yellow, orange, or purple.
Chunk: I partly burned the background (a slight burn that is) but I didn't went further. I never worked with gradients but it sounds like a good idea. I'll definately try it. Thanks.
Anbesol: Thank you for these precisions.
GB: Interesting take. On the other hand, I thought that the table added a touch of warmth (relatively speaking) but I think I see your point.
Ronnoco: Thanks for commenting but I am not sure that I follow you here, with all due respect. While being rather muted, the flowers seems tridimentional and luminous enough (both on my calibrated monitor and in print) to clearly stand out against the background. I perceive a significant difference in tonalities betwen the vase, the flowers and the background.
