No, I DON'T know what's going on here. I think I took this back in Dec 2009 in Oregon, just scanning it now. 120mm film (645 Mamiya).

Does the drop shadow enhance?

I was going to ask if you combined two images. the bottom seems like it's moonlit and the top is a semi-silhouette. Just read your remark. Yeah, it is kind of weird!

As for the photo, other than the surreal aspect of it. I love that there are details still visible in this somewhat back lit scene. I like it.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the drop shadow is just an expt and to me it's always hard to tell if an image is better w/ or w/o one. Maybe it's not so important for a good shot: it will look good either way. With a pedestrian image or one that is telling a story or defining a product, maybe it adds something.

Anyway, here's the image w/o the shadow. I also sharpened it up a tad, which I forgot to do on the first post. Better than the shadowed image?

CORRECTION btw - I now believe this is WHITE SANDS NM. I did see dunes like this in Oregon, but there were no mountains in the background. I'm pretty much sure it's WS.

Armando, I think what happened is that I used a polarizer filter, and that's a no-no when you're shooting Velvia, which this is. The reason is that it's color space is already balanced to create very saturated blue skies, and adding a polarizer is overload. I caught myself doing that once or twice .. This must be one of those times

The shadow really doesn't bother me. I think smoothing the sand out in places would help it more. Nice moody shot. I miss my 645....

well, I guess I should stop replying just before I hit the hay. Thx for the original comment Liban, and I'll try to stop calling you Armando

I guess it worked out. That's the new process of getting a good shot. Just mess up as often as needed till one of them works. Greg, those 645s are going for pretty cheap on eBay. But upgrading them to digital is insanely expensive.

Wow, this is such a beautiful picture. Its got so many dimensions to it! Its like conflicting emotions. The sky looks terse, tense and angry while the sand looks so serene and calm.

thanks dr.. Great observation, calm and moody. I wish it had a little more dynamic range, eg, HDR, but considering it is not I'm happy with it. Med Format is just so pure is that respect, if that means anything in the end...
