RR - Sure looks like the British Isles weather. Ok I guess, but not a super-strong subject here. Also not sure about the bush in the front-right side, if it's a good or bad thing. You could have used something in the front left side of the photo - a cow, etc - to fill in. I like the B&W but it prob would have worked as a color shot also.

    Re: Misty Farmland

Roger, I see this one has gotten some views but no comments (EDIT: DARN YOU GB1!!! ^^^), so I figured I'd throw in my two cents.
This shot is just really not working for me here. I hate to be so blunt, but I may as well offer up some suggestions rather than ignore it. I like how you managed to keep your background relitively sharp in comarison to the plants in the foreground, but I'm really just not feeling the point to them being in the front in the first place. They really don't seem (to me, at least) to have a lot to do with the farmhouse- which by itself would have made a more interesting shot in my opinion.
Also, I realize it's probably getting pretty dreary in the UK this time of year, but this shot seems a bit too dark and flat to me. The exception is that the contrast on the foreground plants is pretty good.
I hate to tear down an image so much, but I figured you've posted a lot of really good work here in the past, and this shot to me is an example of a good idea that just happened to miss the mark.
Thanks for posting- please don't blacklist me now!

Roger, for me what you have here is a very strong scene in the background, but a poor foreground subject and/or placement of it. The misty look, and the depth of field are really working great on that scene in the distance. Perhaps instead of the plant/stalks in the fg, have an old metal bucket or piece of farm tool in the foreground to relate to the scene behind. As a matter of fact, if you included nothiong in the fg I think it would have been stronger than this. This is definetly worth a reshoot, if you can get back here easily.

BooHoo!:cryin: Where's my black book - just kidding

I always post pics that I think there's something wrong with but can't figure it out myself because I know someone on here will point out the obvious which eludes me. And if its ok you'll tell me that to.

All - the weather when this was taken was warm wet and horrible, and dark with a lifting mist. I was trying to capture the wetness of the plants but it didn't work. so its now in the bin. It's the most difficult lighting conditions I have ever tried to cope with.

GB - The cows were in the field behind me, I'm standing in the middle of a country lane in front of a high hedge on tip toes. I have never seen anything in this field so its got to be bad timing on my part. Trust me the colour doesn't work on this shot - its too noisy thanks to lighting conditions.

McMadCow - I appreciate your time and effort in adding your comments on what would make this better, and I agree with all you said. Thanks for the compliment on my previous work - kept you out of my black book. Just checked nobody on here's managed to get in there yet

Gary - Just for you an alternative with nothing in the foreground except that big group of plants. Not sure if this works either.

I learn so much from you chaps - thanks for all the help over the years, I personally feel that I am improving every time I post a photo for critique.

Roger - yeah, I understand, sometimes you know there's something wrong but cant put your finger on it. In this situation I just dont find the (farm?) building very interesting... to me, it's almost an eyesore. If it were just a barn or something I bet it would have been beautiful. The mist sort of adds to the shot, imo.

    Re: Misty Farmland

Guess I'm just different, but I liked the first shot better--maybe it's just 'cause I am from the country. Since the title was "Misty Farmland", I thought the subject was the farm seen through the mist, and the plants, while perhaps a little too prominent, gave the "feel" of standing right there in the field observing the buildings. I think I would have prefered color, though, because in B&W the "mist" tends to be indistinguishable from simply soft focus.

Roger, I like the second image without anything in the fg, but of course there is that large dark area which helps to balance it all. I just find the scene , in the mist with the blur very intriguing, but thats me. I think the shot could/would be much stronger with the right something in the fg, perhaps a boy standing there or an object relevant to a farm.

Gary, You are spot on and I must admit that is why I brought the dead flower heads into the pic. Trouble was I could not get high enough to get the heads into the field without a ladder. I'm 6ft and the hedge is about 5ft 10" hence the previous comment "on tip toes". Will have to get a ladder or find the entrance to the field. I just like the shapes of the buildings.

I will go back and monitor this field, haven't got a tame boy that I can use and even if I did he wouldn't fit in the camera bag

Rocket_Scientist - I did intend for this to be colour originally but I thought there was too much noise for colour and not a misty feel to them hence B&W coversion.

For the people who wanted colour - here are the originals with just levels changed.

Now, I really like these--with or without the stalks. The first has a very realistic look and feel. I like the mist a little more in the second, but the grass seems un-naturally green. Still, both are very nice.
