    Re: Minnesota

1 - too much distraction from the main subject, and that thing on the side is as well - is that a finger?

2 - cool idea - the angle is hurting the shot - try something more level. also - maybe try focussing a little bit more on the reflection in the ball.

3 - the sky is hurting this shot for me, its very plain looking and when you take landscape shots like these you either want a strong blue or a strong blue with clouds peppered. naturally many ways are workable but this, i just dont see as workable.

    Godfather25 -

Going from top to bottom, the first and second are nice usages of a narrow DOF. it really works here in that you brought attention to one area of the photo. I usually use a very small aperature on nature shots, but these show me that a narrow DOF can also make a powerful statement.

The top shot, looks like you got some object into the frame on the top left that obviously shouldnt be there I like the purple flowers. It's a soft subject, in that it doesn't hit you too hard, and is nice in its own way.

The middle shot, I think this idea would work well at Xmas time with a tree behind it. Keep this idea for a few months and see in Dec!

The bottom shot is OK but lacks a strong subject. But I bet it was nice. This probably is one of those shots that you looked at afterwards and said "hmmmmmmm, it's not as great a photo as I remember." I've heard that this is common - when you're there with all the smells, wider angles, crisp air, etc, it just seems better. The camera can't capture those things, unfortunately. If there was a deer standing there or a boat or two in the water it might have been better from a pure photography standpt, but it does exemplify Minnesota's "10,000 Lakes" theme.

    Re: Minnesota

    Godfather,

I owe you comments in reply after you had taken time to comment on my Hawaii shots. From top to bottom: I agree with others that the blob on the left is a bit distracting but the flowers are striking/colors are fantastic. I don't get the middle shot at all, is it a fishing weight/bobber? I'm not sure at all what the subject of the photo is. The third shot captures the lake scene nicely. I lived in Minnesota for several years, have not been to Ely but have been to many lakes and recognize the Minnesota beauty. The sky is blown out as has already been mentioned so with some definition this would have been quite nice. I think you have the right ideas and concept. Keep shooting, that is what we all do. Just keep shooting and learning from each experience.
