    Military Walk

Just another shot that I took. Like I said, still learning what to do, but I think this picture came out okay. Except maybe the people, but what can you expect, its the major walkway to any place on campus. Really enjoy shooting these kind of pictures.

Actually the people are good to have in this pic, though I wish they were closer up. It adds more to the pic in my opinion.

You could have done without the crop too I think, especially seeing how it literally cropped some of the plaque off. Shooting this wide open with your 18-55, down low like you were, focused on the plaque with more subject matter behind it kinda blurred out would have worked better....In my opinion

    Keep it up

Sorry for the double post, for some reason it wouldn't let me edit my post.

Took this today, there were a few people walking around campus when I took this, but most of them went around me as I was taking them. Most people aren't expecting someone to sit down in the middle of the walkway and start taking picture, got a lot of confused looks

Big improvement with the second one. It is level and the addition of the people. If you know how to use the clone stamp you could remove the pole and light from the shoulders of the walkers. Another trick sometimes used in a shot like this is to purposely use a long exposure to catch motion in the walkers but keep the sign sharp.

You know what I think would be really interesting - if there was a military family - mom, dad, a couple of kids or so - and perhaps dad is in the uniform and they are all walking away from the shot ...into the "unknown ahead". That may have to be set up, but if you know a military family in the area I think it would be a great shot for them and for you.

    Re: Military Walk

Since A&M is one of the few schools that offers a ROTC program that allows you to get a commission upon graduation, I might be able to find some of them. Or a group of Corp of Cadet members walking away. Thanks for the idea. LLew.

Greg, I had actually thought about the longer exposure, the only problem is that when I set it to long, the plaque would be out of focus as well as the people. However, I'll give it a try (anything to take more pictures )

Off to take more now that I'm armed with new ideas

Second one is a huge improvement. Lots of potential in this shot I think.

When taking the longer exposure, were you hand holding the shot? Even with IS, I wouldn't hand hold below 1/20th of a second with the kit lens.

Yes I was hand holding it. And I have noticed that it gets hard to hold after about 1/20th, even with steady hands and something to prop up against.
