    Memories Of Days Gone By

This is an area that I hike at quite a bit. It's an old farm with great old rock walls, old stone foundations, and an old, lost to nature, burial plot. The grave stone shot probably would have been better if it had been front lit instead of back lit but, otherwise, what do you think?

Its just an opinion, Aaron, but I think your subject matter blends into the backgrounds and foregrounds too much.
I don't comment on most of your pics as I know you are into b/w film which is cool but I know nothing about it.
I think these would work better in color.
    The subject matter is great.
    Keep Shooting!

The more I shoot B&W, the less I find I know...LOL Don't ever feel like you can't comment on my shots, I am always open to input. I agree that I could use a bit more contrasting. I shot these late afternoon where morning light probably would have been better for the first 2. Also, I forgot to bring filters along Thanks for chiming in Frog

    Aaron

BTW- I have been shooting color, just nowhere near me to get 120 processed. I think I got some really nice shots, so we'll see. I have Wed/Thurs/Fri off for my bday and will use up my last couple rolls of Kodak E100GX slide film and will send em out for developing, so in a couple weeks you should see a bunch of color stuff from me

Re: Memories Of Days Gone By

Aaron, like frog and worse ( ) i know nothing about b & w (well specifically less than i know about colour so that says it all right there).

i do know however that i love b & w as a medium. i have no clue but can imagine how much harder it must be to shoot in b & w.

having grown up with b & w (because colour wasn't a medium then :blush2: ) it is my favourite. however, it doesn't reflect somethings well. your photo of the beach didn't need colour as it was just a great photo in an of itself. your photo of the leaves left me unable to contribute because i know nothing about dof etc.

i really like the second shot because it makes me think that this is a VERY old site (and of course as colour wasn't invented then) b & w should be the shot. (of course i understand that photography wasn't probably invented then by that's bye the bye).

old things to me looks better in b & w, new things in colour. that's just an old farts view of things.

i really honestly wouldn't want to see no. 2 in colour. now whether you could have better dof etc. i have absolutely no clue. to me it says "old" and should be in b & w just to convey an old image. were it in colour i would think "new" but then again that's perhaps what old folks think off. (i had one of my kids ~ pupils ~ ask me if i dreamed in black in white ~ cheeky little thing !!)

anyway number 2 does it for me. great image and a very "old" feel to it. the others kind of matter less what medium they are in.

love the medium by the way and could look at b & w all day.

Re: Memories Of Days Gone By

Thanks 3lions It is a VERY old farmstead. I'm going to go back later this week to hit the morning light. Eerie story from shooting these... I was in the burial plot shooting the gravestones. It's about 20' x 20' and just about completely lost to time. You can make out the stone foundation outline but, the iron fence is almost gone. Shot one was some of the fence pieces that were off to the side. Anyway, after I finished shooting the stones, I was walking to exit the plot, right when I stepped over the edge, a big dead branch fell right where I was walking

I think I like the last two the best, I also feel you are getting a handle on the B&W. You have nice tones here, good scans, nice focus and a good DOF. I see enough detail in them to think a print would look good and show even more detail. Nice job Aaron. Have you done any dodging and burning yet?

Re: Memories Of Days Gone By

Thanks Greg No dodging/burning yet. Saving those for when I can get a real darkroom. I haven't been doing anything to my film shots other than levels adjustments to bring out contrast and some vignetting. You should see the 3rd shot at 4800dpi. It was f/32 and you can see forever into the woods. Also, this is Plus-X 125 if you're interested.

Oh Greg, I found out what was going on with the contrasting on my MF scans. For some reason my scanner won't recognize a 6x6 format. It keeps trying to crop the shots to 645 format. I end up just doing a strip scan and cropping out the shots on my own. For some reason when I do the strip scan, it just comes up flat. When you let the scan software separate the frames, the rendition is a lot better
