    Mekong Dip

This young Lao girl dove into the muddy Mekong River and swam out to our boat as it neared the shore..It was nearing the end of the rainy season and the river was still up...

Why did she swim to your boat? The more I think about it, the more puzzles I find. I hate to think what the real answer is, a different culture at a different time and people do strange things.

Hi Kizz,,we were nearing the river bank and this girl jumped into the water and swam out to our boat..I was a hot steamy day and I suppose she needed a swim..Kids do strange things in strange places..
When we landed she introduced us to her little friends and guided us to a beautiful old Buddhist temple on the hillside. We gave tributes to the Buddha in the temple..One has to remember these people are very poor,,rarely see Westeners..They ask for money to guide you through the forest..
Here is a pic of one of her friends..

My wife is an Australian aid worker in Laos for the last 2 years..With her help we are able to get into places where Westerners just don't (or won't) go..

Interesting shot Jurgen. I'll be honest, it looks like she was about to smile and almost gives her a chimpmunk type feature. I love the shot though, definitely neat to see things from another culture.

I like them both. Without meeting either girl, I feel as though I could describe their personality fairly well just through their pictures.

    Re: Mekong Dip

I spent a year in Thailand. Thailand and Laos are similiar in many ways, they are both basicly very warm and friendly people. I also believe that poverty is more pronounced in Laos.
I like both shots. I think that the second one of the girl by the window could be improved by cropping out the burned out portion of the window. It draws my eye away from the subject. Also, bump up the contrast a bit. Other then that, I like her expression and the soft shadow on the right side of her face. Nice capture.

That water looks too thin to plough and too thick to drink, great shot though. Apart from the blown out window light #2 is such a cool pic.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...
