    Meat Market

This pretty young Lao girl selling meat in an open market in Laos..It was about 30 deg celcius and no refridgeration..Wonders why people turn to vegetarianism in Indochina..

    Re: Meat Market

I didn't need to read your post to freak out that the meat wasn't being stored properly. Is that chicken on her right???

I like the objects in the shot. The leaves in the back, choping block, scale, MEAT, and the girl in red. Your photos have a lot of story/character.

Can you give a few words on your approach to photographing perfect strangers? Do you shoot them unknowingly, with permission, or what happens when they don't appreciate it after they hear a click or see a flash?

Maybe this will have to be in another forum but I wanted to know your perspective.

    Thanks for the photo....very interesting.

    Re: Meat Market

Hi manacsa...I have two approaches to candid photography..One is I hang around near the subject waiting around for something to happen...Doing this the subject get use to me being around and eventually ignore me..When the time is right I rattle off a few images..Another approach is to go in like a storm trooper, get the pic and clear off..Sometimes I ask the subject if it is ok to take a photograph,,most subjects will say yes..In Vietnam for example the subect will often ask for money,,I refuse and move on...There are tribes people who I just don't photograph as common courtesy,,,they still believe I will take their soul...The Akha people in Northern Laos believe this..During my first trip to Indochina in 2004 I photographed a group of Akha women in a market in Northern Laos..One women saw me,came up to me and offered to sell me a small bag of opium..I refused and she got quite annoyed with me..I high tailed it out of there..

    BTW,,thanx for your kind words..

ah, nothing like raw meat and a beautiful woman :blush2:

This photo has great color and composition. I love the way she seems (probably is) bored and not concerned with the pounds of raw flesh rotting away in front of her.
The scale adds a lot to the photo because of the color and I wish we could see all of it...just personal preference.

A beautiful capture and documentary shot of an area I hope to go to one day.
    Thanks for the tips also.

    Cheers.

Ha ha... she's like "Hi, what's your name..?" Funny title and pose (if you did pose her for this...)

Can't see any way to improve it - it's good the way it is.

    Re: Meat Market

Thanks for giving me some insight in to your approach. Helps a whole lot.

The website is full of intriguing photos. Inspires me to take photos all day.

A personal project is to try this type of shooting soon (probably next weeks farmers market) and I know I'll do it next time I visit Philippines.

    Thank you.
