    Malibu Fishing Pier

Made adjustments in Canon software for RAW files....I used the RED filter after converting to monochrome.

Used PS only for crop, resize, and USM.

    What do you think?

works for me, love rthe patterns and the lines that lead the eye towards the end. BW works well here.

I think I'd like to see it with calmer water though, or maybe early evening with a long exposure. This looks like a subject worth revisiting.

Thanks for the comment! I do intend to revisit the location. Next time I'll be sure to go with clouds in the sky and I'll know where to park for free

I'm glad you feel the BW works...

Seems like I have seen this pier before. I like the angle and I also feel the red filter pulled out some great tones. I think the first post should be cropped out. I don't understand, did you use a red filter while shooting or was it a PS adjustment?

Great shot, Eric. Near perfect composition. Yes, clouds would like nice here. Judging from the shadows it looks like you shot this around 10 am?

I spent a lot of time on that pier, both fishing and taking photos. I'll have to dig a few up for ya.

ah...here we go: Another Malibu excurion...

ps I like your conversion to b/w too.

Good perspective and framing. The tones look great here in b&w as well. Mr yuck could have a point with calmer water, and clouds in the sky would add. Still, came off very well.

I was wondering if I should lose or keep the first post but I decided to keep it to have more of the white railing prominent in the foreground. I'll take another look.

I shot this in RAW and used the Canon 'Digital Photo Professional' software. In that program, when I converted the shot to monochrome, it gave me options to apply color filters.

    Thanks for the comment Greg!

You really got some good tones going on. Very nice for a conversion. Even though I have an Olympus I wouldn't mind using the Canon software.

Ray...that's a great set of shots in your thread. My favorite is the one of the pier lit by the sun setting but the background shows a heavy overcast sky....what timing!

My shot was taken one afternoon when we got out of work early. I use to fish at Redondo Beach. What kinda fish did you catch at Malibu?

Thanks for your comments Ray and Gary!

    Re: Malibu Fishing Pier

all I ever caught was either mackeral or guitar fish off the malibu pier. Nothing worth keeping. However, I used to go fishing at pier in Ventura (not the main one, but one by a tackle shop off Schooner) and used to catch small halibut, barracuda, bass, and even crab! The crab were delicious!

Here is the color version. This has been cropped with minor USM in Photoshop. No color modifications.

Does it work in color as well?

I'd say----yes. It's the kind of shot that works either way.

    Re: Malibu Fishing Pier

The water in the colour version stands out better and seems slightly brighter particularly under and near the bridge. That same area in the black and white is slightly more black with a little less detail.
