cool colors, very easy to look at, the textures and lines of the wood is very eye pleasing. I like your tight composition here.

I must be in a bad mood today but what the heck is this???

Don't you think it's kind of hard to mess up a picture of a piece of wood?

Sorry but I just .............. Never mind.

Tyson, as I stated, this is part of a sculpture made of wood. If you think I messed it up, I guess that's your opinion. I'm sorry you find my photos so distasteful. I'm trying to learn here with everyone else. I guess I'm just not in your league when it comes to photography.

    Re: Made Out Of Wood

Nice textures and colours. However, my eye was looking for some kind of focal point - you might not know it was a sculpture without being told .. maybe either a little more of it, or zoom in on a detail of it (eg those willow fingers might make a nice abstract)? As it stands, I would be inclined to shave off half an inch in the right - the little bright area bottom right is a tad distracting.

    Hope this helps!

This is the "Photo Critique " forum, if you want everyone to tell you how nice it is show it to your family. I think your subject would have been better if you showed the hole thing. Not one single person has mentioned the exposure. My only question is, what are you tring to show? Several comments on your composition. Tell me what it is that you composed here and why it is so. I just don't see it? I am not being mean, just honest. Where would you see a photo like this, in a magazine, art show or on someones wall. I think your exposure and lighting rock:thumbsup:

The subject ranks up there with a picture of a desk drawer or cardboard box.

I don't mind if you question my composition, or even why I took the picture, but to just leave the comment you did without anything else just wasn't right. If you thought I should have shown the whole thing, then say so. I don't mind a suggestion, or if someone thinks I could have changed my point of view, but you just hit and ran. That's what stuck in my craw. I'll go back and get another shot of it, and try to compose it better. I was trying for texture, so it's my fault for not stating so....I'll give you that one.

Some days I guess you just gotta step back, other days you gotta get a little closer.

Nice work swm, you got a "love it" and a "hate it" in 2 replies, you can now call this art, frame it and hang it in a gallery :P

John, I think this shot has some potential. I like the skinnier pieces of wood coming down on the right. They add a lot of character. Any chance you have a shot that's panned over just slightly more to the right?

Unfortunately I don't, but I can get back to that spot easily. I am trying to remember if I shot it that way because of an element outside the frame that was distracting or not. Since it was such a lousy day when I shot it, I'm going back when the light and sky is better. There are many more structures and sculptures that I want to shoot there.

Personally I like the way this photo is composed. The branches coming down from the right kind of ressemble a hand.

I kept trying to come up with a title that involved "hand", but was stuck, so I called it what I called it. I'm going to explore that a little more when I return to the site.

I like the picture. It has nice colors and textures. I can see where others are having a hard time finding the subject, but most of my photos suffer similarly :-). I had a slight disconnect when I saw the subject of "wood sculpture" but the picture didn't really show the whole sculpture. I suppose my brain was expecting something that wasn't really there. I also don't think it's a big deal.

    Re: Made Out Of Wood

I should have titled this An Experiment In Color and Texture or something like it. The title as posted was misleading in a way, but I had brain freeze when trying to come up with something. As Prevailing Conditions states, it's no big deal. I'll try to come up with a more apropriate title in the future.

    Re: Made Out Of Wood

I think there is a lot going on on the right side of this photo, I might crop off some
of the left. This is much more than a piece of wood. I like the texture it shows and
the layering of the three woods, Don't let Big T ruffle your feathers, I think his bark is worse than his bite.
But then........he looks kind of big and mean in those firefighter photos....

    Re: Made Out Of Wood

LL.....well, I have to say nobody's been wishy-washy. They either like it or don't. I don't think I've ever posted anything that's gotten so much feedback. I guess that's a good thing. The major problem as I have gathered is the composition, so that's got to change.

Ky....I really don't have an issue with what Tyson said, just his original comment. I'd rather he had left more of a suggestion than just "How hard is it to mess up a piece of wood." His later response gave me a better idea of what he felt. I appreciate everyone's input----good or not.

I usally have to go back to a subject at least twice and sometimes several times before I come up with something. I shot about three gigs worth of pictures twice on Coconuts Ice Cream and the shot I posted was the last one. I finally figured out how to handle the hot lights at the top. It's just part of it. Maybe post a picture of the whole thing and someone here can help with an idea.

Funny you should mention that Greg. I just got back from shooting that thing all over again from just about every angle, and yet I feel the need to go back again! I managed to get a bunch of shooting in of some of the other sculptures at the place, too. Plus on the way home, the college's baseball 9 were playing at home, and dropped in there for a couple innings of shots.

    John,

I like the textures, especially in the big plank. There are a couple of areas on the bottom cross member which seem a little bright and need to be burnt in a tad. The withies do have interest and the best bit could be a little higher up where they cross. However the light on the bottom right needs to be cropped out.

Have you looked at taking this at an angle?

Roger, I went back for more yesterday, and I'll have to go back again. I'm just not getting it.
