    Re: Is this macro?

Macro seems to be an iffy term. My photographic technology isn't up to snuff however, so I won't comment much on whether or not it's a macro or not. However, with the shot, I love the colors. Great mix of subtle and mixedcolors. Definately accent the flowers well.

    Well done!

    Re: Is this macro?

I like the great color in your shot. Because the depth of field is very shallow when shooting closeups, we usually have to choose which part of the subject is going to be in sharp focus. I think this would be a stronger shot if the petal on the right that has the spots were in sharp focus rather than the nearer ends of the filaments.

Here's what this site's Glossary says about macros...
    "Macrophotography
Commonly, close up photography. Specifically, any photography where the level of magnification is 1:1 or larger. "
Technically macros are shots where the image on the negative/slide is at least as large as the subject in life. However, years ago the marketing people in the camera firms took over the term and would market lenses as 1:3 macros or 1:4 macros even though they could not actually focus close enough to produce a 1:1 macro shot. It's gone downhill from there, especially with the advent of small digital sensors and the term now just means that the camera can focus at a closer than normal range.

    Re: Is this macro?

I'd say no from looking at it, but it doesn't really matter what you call it, does it? You want to get the shot.

It looks ok btw but it seems you were either just off on focus, or it moved as you shot it. Macros require more DOF than normal lenses, but since you're so close the slightest movement is amplified. So just when you need the fast shutter speed, you cant have it cause you need a very small aperature too. This makes macro pretty challenging - best on windless days or where you're protected from wind gusts.

Btw I have a 1:1 macro lens but there are a lot of more inexpensive ones out there that are 1:2 (half actual size) that are still considered a macro lens. The 1:1 was more to my needs, since I really wanted to get in close. I dont use it that much however, but it's nice to have it in the arsonale.
