    Lyin' Around ...

    That's lion around...

From the Serengeti a few weeks ago. Which do you like better?

It's amazing how close these big beasts will let the truck get before they get riled up. I guess with that many SUVs cruising around day in and day out, they get used to it.

I like these alot, especially the second one. Staring right at you saying "if I werent so lazy right now, you would be a nice snack..." I am envious, I didn't get close enough or have a good enough lens to get these kinds of shots of lions when I was in Africa.

the first one has excellent lighting, the second one has a greenish hue, maybe correct that on the lion?

I like the second one. Looking at the camera with such intense eyes is a big plus. I do feel you could boost up the saturation and contrast. Maybe layer the shot to make the lion stand out from the surroundings a little. But just a little.

    Re: Lyin' Around ...

I like the first because of the color.
The second has too much of a green cast but might be better if corrected.

    Re: Lyin' Around ...

Thks guys, I agree that the color cast on the second shot just doesn't seem right (not that I'd tell him that to his face.. ). I am having a hard time correcting it.

Here's a slightly modified version (posted) with a tad more contrast, less green, more yellow and slightly sharpened to try to complete with # 1, which is very sharp. Please take a shot at it too if you have the time.

Dubbs, I wouldn't worry too much about not getting the perfect shot while over there. I took about 900 shots in Africa and from what I am seeing in the editing process I'd give myself a C grade at best :skep: Too many of my safari shots are soft, soft, soft :mad2: I rented a Nikon 80-400 VR lens and am not sure what I did wrong cause many of them are not very sharp and some seem 'double visioned' - like the VR did some strange stuff to the image or whatever. Booo hooo. Some are salvageable. I should be done editing by Sunday evening.

New hue/saturation layer adjustment, set hue to -10. I think somewhere in -15 and -8 is about right... if you wanted to keep the super green background, just use a mask and paint over the foliage

    Re: Lyin' Around ...

You beat me to it, Caleb.
What I did in photoshop elements 6.0 is open 'enhance', click color, click 'remove color cast'. I then clicked the eye dropper on a gray part of the tree but wasn't happy so re-set it and then clicked on the white of his beard. Hope it loads here as well as it looked but you can compare Caleb method with mine.

Now they're both up I see very little difference. I also did an auto sharpen which I think shows a bit.

Nice shots, GB. I was going to mention the color cast in the second, but I see you have some help in correcting it. The corrections look good.
    Well done.

    Re: Lyin' Around ...

Caleb, Frog - I think both of your edits are better than mine. There's very slight differences: Caleb's looks a bit cooler but the shadow areas are more detailed. Frog, omehow Caleb's looks sharper to me even though you say you did sharpen. They are all so close.

    Thks Gary.

Nice shots, I'll have to get to Africa some time, Patagonia's first though! I gave it a wack, maybe a little too much? I don't know what LR did to this photo, but I would think since the size hosting here is max 293kb your photo couldn't be larger than that, but after I did a W/B adjustment the size was huge and I had to downsize it to 75% quality. Go figure...

EOS - Looks quite good! A bit saturated maybe, but this is personal taste.

Now that I have all these different versions I should ask the lion which he prefers.

The 2nd one definitely works. Love the look he's giving u. straight to your lens. The edits are great also.

    G-
The lion was quite popular! My two cents, the second shot was really great and I really liked that so many people played with the color settings, I think it's nice as a beginner to see the difference (with explinations). I copied them all and placed them side by side and I can see how each gives the picture a slightly different tone. The side profile of the Lion reminded me of the profile of a King on a Playing Card-totally in control. And Africa? Super jealous!

Thks and don't be jealous, just start planning on going yourself and getting some great shots. Or just go to the zoo, do a little PSing, and tell everyone that it was Africa! (that's what I did.. maybe )

    Thks also, Liban.
