    lone tree

No photoshop trickery with this shot. It's all genuine and taken this summer. I love the direction of the lines on the field and the tree against the dappled sky. Could have gone for more contrast but i like it soft in this shot.

A classic kind of shot and I do like the way the 'horizon' curves. A soft treatment suits it well too. I wonder though if you need quite so much sky, or quite so much on the right? Cropping it so the tree is on a third might be compositionally more satisfying - still, that kind of thing is a matter of taste.

thanks for the reply. i know thirds is the done thing, but sometimes rules have to be broken, and i feel the the lay of the land and the lines in the field suits a wider shot. like you say, it's a matter of taste, and some will prefer it on thirds, but not for me in this case. thanks again.

I think this is very good ! I do think you need to have as much sky as it is here to give the whole scene more space to enhance the lonesomeness of the tree. To me, I'd have more empty space, too.

If all a photog does is to follow the "golden rule" of composition, I have a feeling I know what his or her shots look like even before he/she presses the shutter button

Besides, even if you do like to follow the "golden rule", my understanding is the subject of interest only needs to be somewhere around those...spots...you know...and don't have to exactly there.

BTW, take a look at this photo:

It was sold for $4,338,500 on November 8, 2011.

thanks for the reply and advice. i can't believe how much that photo sold for. its certainly not on thirds! and for basically what's some very nice colour banding, that's quite a nice financial return for his photo!

Very nice landscape shot with very pleasant colouring.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan

    Hi baldemort,
Great pictures and I like the composition and balance of the picture.
I like the curves on the field. Where did you took this picture?
