Little Red Out-House (Winter in Sullivan County)

Here is a shot I keep coming back to. I like it, mainly because of the subject. I thought the comp was too tight, but I keep thinking that it seems ok for this subject. (Seems almost like a Pop-Art approach)
    What do you think?
    Thanks

Re: Little Red Out-House (Winter in Sullivan County)

It is an incredibly cute and unusual little house. I thought it amusing that the huge imposing communications pole has no cable to the little house. That one horizontal piece of wood connecting the verges of the roof is great, almost as if the overall structure is totally dependent on it. The frame is congested by the house and pole but that is exactly what adds to the charm.
There is an interesting diagonal shadow visible below the window and I'm curious as to where it's coming from. I don't think it is from the pole? The shadow at the top is obviously of the overhang of the roof.
Just under the eaves on the right hand side there are three, straight, uniform bands of cloud. Is this natural Gary.
All in all though a very enjoyable portrait of a little house with great exposure as per usual.

I have a total lack of respect for anything connected with society, except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer. Brendan Behan

I agree with Tom on most all of his points. I don't feel it is cropped to tight given the small subject. I do fine the pole and phone wire interesting along with the board at the top. I think it might have been a little stronger image if had been shot more dead on with the house, but it's hard to critique your compositional skills because they are so good. I think this would be a great subject printed out to a large size and the smaller web size picture can not give it justice. The overall quality of the image is great

    Thanks for commenting. .
Tom . . .I appreciate your analysis on this. I felt the same way about the tight crop. It somehow adds to the charm of the little house and pole. I was hoping it would come off like that, anyway. That piece of wood across the top reminds me of a bandaid on a kid.
I see the bands in the sky under the right side roof eave and it is natural, but nonetheless, odd looking. I'm glad you spotted that, I had not really noticed it. I took the bands out and smoothed out the area. I think it worked in resolving that . I posted the edit on the gallery and a link here. btw, I do not know what is causing the shadow on the front of the house.I have another shot of the area, and there is nothing else near this house but the post. odd
    Thanks for you time, Tom
Greg . . . When you say more dead on, do you mean standing over a bit more to the right? I guess I may have been over to the left of it a bit so as to get the pole without having to angle the camera towards it. I'm glad you feel the tight crop is ok, as this was really the "worry" I had with the composition.
    thanks Greg.

    Gary,
I can see why you keep coming back. This little structure is a gold mine for photography. Have you done any in b & w?

Thanks for the comments, John. Actually, I only shot this once or twice, but it is this particuliar shot that I kept looking over at again. Have not converted to b&w as I felt the colors were part of the appeal here. Although, it probably would look ok in b&w. thanks

Yes Gary I meant maybe one step right. But I feel the height is perfect.

I don't know why I expected bolder colors but your choice of muted finishing as well as control of lighting ends up a success here.

Thanks for commenting, Tuna. Actually, I do like the muted subtle color in my Post processing, but this seems to have come out less bold than I remembered when I prepared this for display. I had edited this and posted it in my gallery

I warmed it up slightly, dodged a bit here and there, and smoothed out the bands in the clouds under the right roof eave as Tom pointed out. The print is alot bolder than this, and I feel it works better for this subject
    Thanks again

When you say you favor the muted colors, are you specifically refering to a comparison of this picture and the one I linked to in my gallery? Or just my PP in general. As for the lcd screen, my girlfriend just recently got a new computer with an lcd screen (nothing expensive) and I can now directly compare the exact same image on my Viewsonic 19" CRT ( calibrated) and her Westinghouse 17" LCD. huge difference! The lcd seems to be very bright and blowing out the details in the highlights often.Images seem to get washed out as well. Screen savers look incredible though. I am going to calibrate her monitor soon to see if it helps any.
I am due for a new computer and monitor soon , but am very reluctant to go with an lcd, unless it is maybe a Lacie with hood.

cheaper LCD monitors have problems covering the full dynamic range.. mine has a bias towards blowing the whites.. but having said that its very good for showing shadow detail.. its also pin sharp..

they come set up for being displayed in over bright chain store or office conditions.. the first thing u have to do is turn the brightness down as far as it will go without loseing to much contast

it takes a while to get used to a monitor change.. no two monitors look exactly the same calibrated or not..

but then again neither do two digital camers..

i just like subdued colours.. i hate the californian "sun drenched blue sky" look..

probably cos i live in the UK and am jealous of the sunshine they get and we dont.. he he

Yeah, I brought the brightness down to below 50%(32, actually) and set the temp at 6500, but still way to bright . I will see what the Gretag macbeth has me bring it down to.
Also, text not as sharp and clear as on my crt. I think I need to look at a very high performing lcd to see if I would go with that.

they do have to be run in there native resolution for maximum clarity.. u cant take your pick with resolutions like u can with crt.. any less than the native and the monitor interpolates and plays games with its individual pixels.. text shows it up badly..

mine is very sharp for text at it native resolution..

I'm certain it is in it's native resolution, but I'll have to look into that for sure.

Re: Little Red Out-House (Winter in Sullivan County)

Not sure I'd live there, but great shot. It's a tad bit tight in composition, but that might be an advantage in this situation, as it might enhance the feeling of smallness. Sooooo clear a pic. This might show that a direct digital pic can get clarity that a film and scan cannot.
