I think everyone will tell you that a tripod will help in these cases, along with a timed exposure. Look at some of the other night shots posted, and they'll give you a pretty good idea of what settings to use.

I second that. A tripod is the way to go, and the only way to go on the neon shot.

    Re: Lighting

    Not bad for 16.

Carrying around a tripod is a hassle sometimes. Try laying the camera on a ledge and leaning it against a wall, then use the self timer to trigger. Or you can get a remote cable so you can use the B setting. That will work for spur-of-the-moments, but if you're taking night shots it really makes little sense to not have a tripod. They also sell very little pocket ones.

I used to go everywhere without a tripod....now I never leave home without.
It is the single most important tool to successful night shots...IMHO

    Re: Lighting

The more photos you take you will find you will end up carting a tripod around with you. Especially if you are out just to take photos for the day. Sometimes I've found myself without a tripod and I use a bench or the bridge railing etc. If you have a tripod bag you wear it over your shoulder, hands free. Keep up the good work.
with a click of the shutter, you could surprise yourself
